Machinist

The Machinist is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of a variety of machine tools used to manufacture precision components from metal and other materials. In this role, the Machinist leads diagnostic efforts and delivers effective solutions. Beyond technical responsibilities, this position is instrumental in mentoring and training less experienced technicians—promoting skill development, safety awareness, and best practices across the team.
General Duties

Operate a variety of machine tools including lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses; adjust settings and monitor machine behavior to maintain consistency and efficiency in production runs.

Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, speeds, and feeds based on job specifications and material type; complete precise setups for optimal machine performance and dimensional accuracy.

Perform basic preventive maintenance (cleaning, lubrication, minor adjustments) and report machine malfunctions or wear to the supervisor to maintain operational readiness.

Standardize tooling layouts for quicker access and use blocks or spacers to minimize zeroing.

Read and interpret drawings, schematics, and written instructions, translating design requirements into precise machining actions.

Review and verify job travelers, routers, and setup sheets to ensure compliance with customer specifications and internal standards.

Use precision measuring instruments—calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, and dial indicators—to verify part dimensions and tolerances against drawings and inspection criteria.

Accurately complete production and inspection documentation, recording deviations, corrective actions, and improvements to ensure traceability and quality-control compliance.

Prepare job reports, document work performed, and communicate findings to the supervisor or customer.

Typically 1–2 years of experience as a machinist.

Knowledge of manual machine operations (lathes, mills, grinders).

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings.

Proficiency with basic hand tools and precision instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges).

Ability to perform basic machine setups.

Strong computer and math skills.

Persistence and resilience to work through challenges and setbacks, both your own and those of the team.

Willingness to learn new tasks and adapt to changing workloads.

Working toward building a personal tool set for work use.

Able to work 40 hours per week on a regular basis (excluding holidays and PTO).

Available to work additional hours as needed; overtime is anticipated and may include evenings and weekends.

Ability to lift heavy components up to 50 lbs.

Physical stamina and strength to handle heavy materials.

Ability to stand, climb, push, pull, crouch, or kneel for extended periods.

Indoor shop environment with exposure to mechanical, electrical, and environmental hazards and varying temperatures.

Work area may be very noisy and may require ear protection.

Travel is not anticipated for this position.
