Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Tax Manager to join our growing Tax team. This position is responsible for managing a designated portfolio of clients and overseeing all tax-related matters, including tax return preparation and review, tax notices, planning, research, and client consultation.
The Tax Manager will work closely with our Director of Tax, CFO team, tax associates and seniors, clients, and other internal departments to ensure accurate and timely tax filings while identifying opportunities for proactive tax planning.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced tax professional who enjoys working directly with clients, developing team members, solving complex tax issues, and taking ownership of their work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
Duties
- Manage a portfolio of clients and oversee all aspects of their income tax needs, including tax return preparation and review, responding to notices, tax planning, and client consultation.
- Prepare and review federal and state income tax returns, with a primary focus on Form 1065 (Partnership), Form 1040 (Individual), and Form 1120S (S Corporation).
- Ensure assigned tax filings are accurate, complete, compliant, and submitted on time in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Review tax returns prepared by tax associates and senior team members to ensure accuracy, completeness, compliance, and adherence to internal quality standards.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, training, and real-time feedback to junior tax team members.
- Collaborate with CFOs to advise clients on tax-efficient strategies and evaluate the tax implications of business and personal financial decisions.
- Research complex tax issues and provide concise, well-supported recommendations and summaries.
- Maintain current knowledge of tax legislation, IRS regulations, state tax rules, and filing requirements.
- Partner with internal teams, including Accounting, Payroll, and CFOs, to align tax strategies with broader client objectives and ensure compliance for tax-impacting transactions.
- Communicate proactively with the Director of Tax regarding client status, questions, potential issues, and areas requiring additional support.
- Take ownership of assigned projects and manage multiple client returns and deadlines simultaneously.
- Participate in PracticeCFO's EOS framework, including quarterly Rocks, Scorecard metrics, and IDS (Identify, Discuss, Solve) sessions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA certification required.
- 5–7 years of tax preparation experience, including a minimum of 1–2 years of management experience in public accounting.
- Strong technical tax knowledge related to partnerships, S corporations, and individuals.
- Strong understanding of current IRS regulations, state tax rules, filing requirements, and tax law.
- Proficiency with S Corporation and partnership basis rules.
- Strong understanding of standard depreciation methods and asset lives.
- Ability to understand and evaluate the tax implications of business sales, including asset sales, partnership interest sales, and stock sales.
- Proficiency with tax preparation software; experience with UltraTax preferred.
- Strong knowledge of QuickBooks Online.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and formulas.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain tax matters to clients and team members.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.
