Position Summary
The Scenic Carpenter supports the production and event operations of the Van Singel Fine Arts Center through scenic construction, painting, installation, maintenance, and technical support. This position works closely with the Technical Director to ensure productions, concerts, educational programs, and events are completed safely, efficiently, and at a high standard.
The Scenic Carpenter serves as a key member of the technical production team and helps maintain the facilities, equipment, and scenic resources necessary to support a growing number of performances and community events throughout the year.
Primary Responsibilities
Scenic Construction & Production Support

Construct, paint, install, and strike scenic elements for theatre productions and special events.

Assist with load-ins, scene changes, and technical preparations.

Assist with post-show resets and restoration of performance spaces.
Design

Serve as Scenic Designer for a minimum of two productions annually.

Collaborate with directors and production teams to develop scenic concepts and plans.
Shop & Facility Maintenance

Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety within the scene shop and backstage areas. Assist with inventory management, equipment upkeep, and routine maintenance.

Support ongoing improvements to shop operations and storage systems.
Student Crew Development

Assist in training and supervising student technical crews.

Provide instruction in scenic construction, painting techniques, shop safety, and backstage.

Help develop student leadership within technical theatre programs.
Qualifications

Experience in scenic construction, carpentry, painting, and theatrical production.

Ability to safely operate common shop tools and equipment.

Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with production staff.

Experience working with students or educational theatre programs preferred.
Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week, with flexibility based on production schedules, events, and seasonal demands.
Wage: Per Edustaff Contract
