I. Position Overview
The Equipment Supervisor is responsible for supervising the daily maintenance, repair, and reliable operation of production equipment and supporting facility systems. This position coordinates the work of maintenance personnel, responds to equipment issues, monitors factory utility usage and costs, and maintains an effective spare-parts inventory system.
Working under the direction of the Equipment Maintenance Manager, the Equipment Supervisor supports preventive and corrective maintenance programs and helps ensure equipment operates safely, efficiently, and with minimal production interruption. This position requires hands-on mechanical and electrical maintenance experience, effective personnel-management skills, and the ability to analyze equipment and operating costs.
II. Specific Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities and work assignments of maintenance personnel.
- Prioritize maintenance requests based on safety, equipment condition, production needs, and operational impact.
- Monitor the quality, timeliness, and completion of assigned maintenance work.
- Provide technical guidance, direction, and hands-on assistance to maintenance personnel.
- Support the implementation of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs established by the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Perform and oversee routine inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of production equipment and supporting facility systems.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and coordinate timely repairs to minimize production downtime.
- Troubleshoot foundational mechanical and electrical issues and escalate complex or recurring problems to the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Identify equipment-performance concerns and recommend corrective actions or process improvements.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with Production, Quality, EHS, and other departments to minimize operational disruption.
- Monitor factory utility consumption and costs, including water, electricity, and gas.
- Analyze utility-usage trends and identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and control operating costs.
- Assist the Equipment Maintenance Manager with maintenance-cost tracking, budget planning, and cost-saving initiatives.
- Establish and maintain an organized spare-parts inventory system.
- Monitor spare-parts usage, availability, storage, and minimum inventory levels.
- Submit purchasing and replenishment requests to ensure critical replacement parts remain available.
- Help prevent excessive inventory, unnecessary purchases, and shortages of essential parts.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspection reports, equipment histories, utility data, and spare-parts documentation.
- Support the effective use of the Computerized Maintenance Management System for work orders, preventive maintenance scheduling, asset tracking, and maintenance history.
- Assist with equipment installation, modification, commissioning, testing, and continuous-improvement projects.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors, contractors, and service providers as authorized by the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Review completed vendor or contractor work and promptly communicate concerns to management.
- Train maintenance employees on equipment procedures, troubleshooting methods, documentation expectations, and safe work practices.
- Monitor employee performance and provide regular coaching, instruction, and feedback.
- Communicate employee performance, attendance, conduct, or training concerns to the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Participate in performance evaluations, corrective-action discussions, and employee-development planning as assigned.
- Help ensure maintenance activities comply with applicable OSHA, FDA, GMP, environmental, and company requirements.
- Ensure maintenance personnel follow lockout/tagout procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment.
- Participate in investigations involving equipment failures, safety incidents, and maintenance-related concerns.
- Assist with root-cause analysis and the development and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized maintenance workspaces, tool areas, and spare-parts storage locations.
- Respond to emergency maintenance situations outside normal working hours when operationally necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
III. Essential Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical education, apprenticeship, or certification in industrial maintenance, electrical technology, mechanical technology, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of three years of industrial equipment maintenance experience, preferably in a manufacturing or processing environment.
- Previous experience supervising, leading, or coordinating maintenance employees or technical personnel.
- Hands-on experience performing mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
- Foundational knowledge of electrical systems, motors, pumps, hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanical systems, and production equipment.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs, equipment inspections, and standard repair processes.
- Experience managing or maintaining spare-parts inventory.
- Experience monitoring utility consumption, maintenance expenses, or other operational costs.
- Ability to analyze cost and usage information and identify opportunities for greater efficiency.
- Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, diagrams, work orders, safety procedures, and technical instructions.
- Ability to diagnose equipment issues and determine an appropriate course of action.
- Strong leadership, personnel-management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to plan and prioritize multiple maintenance needs in a fast-paced production environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.
- Basic computer proficiency and the ability to maintain written and electronic records.
- Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems preferred.
- Experience in a food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, chemical-processing, or similarly regulated manufacturing environment preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and general industrial safety practices preferred.

Scope of Responsibility: Supervises daily equipment-maintenance activities and supports the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of production equipment and facility systems.
Reports To: Equipment Maintenance Manager
Direct Reports: Maintenance technicians, mechanics, electricians, maintenance specialists, or other assigned maintenance personnel.
V. Physical Requirements and Safety Considerations of the PositionPhysical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces when properly trained and authorized.
- Manual dexterity necessary to safely operate hand tools, power tools, testing devices, equipment, and computer systems.
- Visual acuity necessary to inspect equipment, identify potential defects, and read technical documentation.
- Ability to work around moving machinery, electrical components, industrial equipment, and chemical substances.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to noise, heat, cold, dust, odors, and varying environmental conditions while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Ability to respond to urgent or emergency maintenance situations outside normal working hours when necessary.

Environmental Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a manufacturing and production environment. The position may be exposed to moving machinery, elevated noise levels, electrical components, industrial chemicals, dust, odors, and varying temperatures. Administrative responsibilities may be performed in a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioned office setting.
