The Heavy Truck Driver is a part of the Road and Bridge team. This team is responsible for construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the county that are not part of the state highway system or with a municipality. The role performs skilled duties associated with the operation of trucks and repair, maintenance and construction of County roads, bridges and right-of-ways; operates heavy equipment incidental to the work.
- Operates heavy duty trucks or trailer trucks in connection with the transporting or collection of large quantities of materials such as dirt, gravel, sand, rock, pea gravel, sludge, and heavy-duty supplies

Inspect and perform operator maintenance such as lubricating and making minor mechanical repair. Notify mechanics of any necessary repairs needed to equipment

Operate heavy equipment in removal and placement of dirt, gravel, rock, etc. and other similar operations to maintain existing network of County roads

Assist in routine road maintenance, drainage system construction and maintenance, and/or river/creek maintenance or flood control. Activity may include brushing; maintaining culverts; maintaining ditches; blading; reshaping and improving shoulders; and clearing debris from the roadway surface and right of way; excavating; placing embankment; pipe installation; placing rip rap; vegetation management and/or mowing; grading

Performs all work in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, County and department policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety

EDUCATION:
Required:

High School Diploma or GED; in lieu of degree a minimum 4 years experience in construction work, heavy equipment operating or related fields.
SKILLS ~ EXPERIENCE:
Required

A valid Texas CDL-Class A license and a good driving record.

Working knowledge of road construction procedures and practices: knowledge of DOT guidelines.

Ability to make independent decisions, communicate effectively and appropriately with employees and general public
Preferred:

One (1) year experience driving a tractor / dump-trailer combination

Three (3) years of stable work experience

Experience operating heavyequipment

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Works mostly outdoors. Exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, humidity, wetness, hazardous chemicals, insects, dust, poisonous plants, unpleasant smells, fumes, traffic hazards, and physical stress from exertion. Some incumbents may have contact with buried electric, phone, or television cable lines. This position follows DOT guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, bend, push and pull. May have to lift heavy boxes or objects up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.

HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: This position may be required to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the facility. The position schedule is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
