The Dean of Students is responsible for implementing Scholarship Prep's school-wide student behavior and support systems to promote a safe, positive, and productive learning environment. This role serves as the primary responder to student behavior concerns, coordinating timely interventions, restorative practices, and family communication while helping ensure students receive the appropriate level of support.
The Dean works closely with the Principal, counselors, teachers, and other staff to implement school-wide PBIS systems, respond to student behavior incidents, conduct investigations, and proactively support students whose behavior may interfere with learning. This position focuses on implementing established systems rather than supervising staff or providing instructional coaching and reports directly to the Principal.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Behavior & School Culture
- Serve as the primary responder to student behavior incidents and classroom escalations.
- Support teachers in addressing student behavior concerns to maximize instructional time.
- Implement school-wide PBIS systems and reinforce consistent behavioral expectations.
- Facilitate restorative conversations, re-entry meetings, and conflict resolution between students.
- Coordinate appropriate behavioral responses in alignment with school policies and procedures.
- Maintain a visible presence throughout the school day, including arrival, passing periods, recess, lunch, dismissal, and other high-traffic times.
Student Intervention & Support
- Conduct intake meetings with students following behavior incidents to determine appropriate next steps.
- Assess student needs and determine when concerns should be addressed through restorative practices, counseling, MTSS, administration, or disciplinary action.
- Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and other support staff to ensure students receive appropriate interventions.
- Assist in developing and implementing behavior intervention plans for students with ongoing behavioral needs.
- Proactively monitor and support students with recurring behaviors during transitions, substitute coverage, assemblies, and other situations where support may be needed.
Investigations & Documentation
- Conduct investigations related to student behavior incidents.
- Gather statements and relevant information to support administrative decision-making.
- Maintain accurate documentation of student behavior incidents, interventions, and follow-up actions.
- Monitor behavior trends and communicate patterns or concerns to school leadership.
Family Partnership
- Communicate with families regarding student behavior concerns, interventions, and restorative outcomes.
- Partner with families to develop strategies that support student success and positive behavior.
- Participate in meetings with families regarding behavioral concerns as needed.
Other Duties
- Work collaboratively with site administration, counselors, and teachers to ensure consistent implementation of school-wide behavior systems.
- Participate in SST, MTSS, IEP, behavior, and other student support meetings as requested.
- Support implementation of school-wide safety procedures and crisis response protocols when needed.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 4 years of student discipline experience, preferably in an urban public setting.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
- Experience working with school-aged children in an educational, youth development, behavioral support, or related setting.
- Experience implementing PBIS, restorative practices, trauma-informed practices, or other positive behavior support frameworks.
