Junior Mechanic
Scope of Role
The Junior Mechanic is responsible for assisting with the maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance of bakery production equipment, facility systems, and company assets. Working under the direction of the Maintenance Lead, this role supports equipment reliability, minimizes production downtime, and assists with general mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, and facility maintenance activities while developing the skills necessary to become a fully qualified Maintenance Mechanic.
Key Responsibilities
· Assist in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining bakery production equipment, including mixers, proofers, ovens, Rheon equipment, conveyors, slicers, packaging equipment, compressors, and other production machinery.
· Perform routine preventive maintenance activities according to established schedules.
· Assist with equipment installations, modifications, and changeovers.
· Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and assist in restoring equipment to service.
· Perform equipment inspections and identify potential maintenance concerns before failures occur.
· Replace bearings, belts, chains, sprockets, motors, rollers, and other mechanical components.
· Lubricate equipment and perform routine mechanical adjustments.
· Learn proper alignment, tension, and machine setup procedures for current and future equipment.
· Assist the Maintenance Lead with troubleshooting electrical components, including motors, sensors, switches, relays, contactors, and control devices.
· Replace basic electrical components under supervision.
· Learn to read electrical schematics and safely troubleshoot industrial electrical systems.
· Perform general building maintenance, including painting, patching walls, lighting repairs, minor plumbing, and facility upkeep.
· Assist with maintaining doors, warehouse equipment, and building infrastructure.
· Maintain cleanliness and organization of the maintenance shop and storage areas.
· Complete assigned preventive maintenance tasks accurately and on schedule.
· Document completed work and report findings to the Maintenance Lead.
· Help identify critical spare parts and notify the Maintenance Lead when inventory is low.
Skills & Qualifications
· High school diploma or GED.
· 1-2 years of mechanical, industrial maintenance, automotive, manufacturing, or related experience preferred. Recent graduates of an accredited technical or vocational program in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, Automotive Technology, or a related field
· Basic knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and mechanical systems.
· Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
· Ability to read and follow maintenance procedures and equipment manuals.
· Valid driver's license preferred.
· Experience in food manufacturing or bakery operations.
· Forklift certification is preferred (but not required).
Desired Skills
· Ability to adapt to changing production priorities while maintaining a positive attitude and professional work ethic.
· Basic understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Food Safety, OSHA regulations, and sanitation requirements.
· Mechanical aptitude with a strong interest in industrial maintenance and equipment repair.
· Basic knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and preventive maintenance practices.
· Willingness to learn mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and welding skills in a manufacturing environment.
· Forklift experience or willingness to become certified.
· Technical school, vocational training, or trade certifications in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, Automotive Technology, Electrical Technology, Welding, or a related field are a plus.
· Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent attention to detail and commitment to performing quality work.
· Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with Production, Quality, Warehouse, Sanitation, and Maintenance teams.
· Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
· Dependable, self-motivated, and eager to learn new skills.
· Demonstrates a strong sense of urgency, accountability, and commitment to safety.
Work hours:
· Saturday 5:00 am-1:30 pm
· Sunday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
· Wednesday - Friday 2:00 pm -10:00 pm
