Shipyard Marine Mechanic
Location: Norfolk, VA

Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Shipyard Marine Mechanic to perform installation, maintenance, overhaul, repair, and alignment of marine machinery, equipment, and systems aboard vessels and within shipyard facilities. This role supports ship repair, maintenance, and modernization work on propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and marine support equipment in a shipyard environment. Marine Mechanics are defined by their ability to work on a broad range of marine machinery and systems that maintain vessel readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Dismantle, inspect, repair, modify, maintain, align, overhaul, and install a wide variety of marine machinery and equipment such as propulsion machinery, pumps, compressors, lifeboat davits, anchor handling gear, and auxiliary systems.
- Apply mechanical trade practices to support shipboard and shipyard maintenance work.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, technical manuals, blueprints, and work instructions.
- Perform mechanical alignment, measurement, and adjustment operations using precision tools and test equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical systems and components to identify defects and determine corrective actions.
- Perform preventative, corrective, and scheduled maintenance tasks in accordance with shipyard and customer requirements.
- Work with cross-functional teams including supervisors, engineers, and other trades to coordinate safe and efficient project execution.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used; complete required documentation and inspection reports.
- Comply with quality standards, safety policies, and environmental regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Marine Mechanic, Marine Machinery Mechanic, Shipyard Mechanic, or similar mechanical trade
- Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in marine propulsion systems and auxiliary machinery
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and mechanical drawings
- Experience using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and test equipment
- Knowledge of industrial and shipyard safety practices and OSHA requirements
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on U.S. Navy, government, or commercial vessels and marine equipment
- Familiarity with NAVSEA, ABS, and USCG standards
- Experience with diesel engines, hydraulics/pneumatics, and related marine systems
- Prior shipyard or waterfront maintenance experience
- Active or prior security clearance (preferred but not required)
Pre-Employment & Compliance Requirements
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and pre-employment drug screening
- Candidate may be required to complete a fit-for-duty assessment and respirator fit testing, depending on job requirements
- Must be eligible to obtain access to U.S. military bases
- Must have OSHA 10 Maritime or be able to obtain it if required
Physical & Work Environment
- Work performed aboard vessels, in shipyard production areas, and machinery spaces
- Exposure to noise, heat, cold, and varying weather conditions
- Required use of PPE including hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, and fall protection
- Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, bend, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Extended periods of standing and working in tight or confined spaces may be required

Pay: $22.00 - $30.00 per hour
