Job Summary
We are seeking Laborers and Skilled Laborers to support the installation and maintenance of underground utilities, including fiber optic, electric, gas, and water systems. This role operates heavy equipment and works closely with field crews to meet daily production and safety targets.
Operators are responsible for safely running construction equipment such as excavators, trenchers, and HDD drills to install underground infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment (excavators, backhoes, skid steers, trenchers, HDD drills)
- Perform underground installation for:
- Fiber optic conduit & cable
- Water, sewer, gas, and electric utilities
- Follow direction from Foreman/Superintendent on daily production goals
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections
- Maintain equipment (fueling, greasing, minor repairs)
- Read and interpret construction prints, locates, and bore plans
- Work around marked utilities and ensure safe excavation practices
- Assist crew with labor tasks when needed
Operators are often expected to “operate multiple types of construction equipment and assist crews while maintaining underground utilities safely.”
Required Qualifications
- 1–3+ years operating heavy construction equipment
- Experience in underground utilities or telecom construction preferred
- Ability to work in trenches, uneven terrain, and outdoor environments
- Knowledge of utility locates and damage prevention practices
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred for some roles)
- Strong safety awareness and communication skills
Preferred Experience (High Value in Telecom/Fiber)
- Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) experience
- Fiber optic / conduit installation
- Bore tracking / locating systems
- Working with plow crews or trench crews
Physical Requirements
- Lift 50+ lbs regularly
- Work 8–12 hour shifts (overtime common)
- Travel may be required depending on project
