Overview
The Yale Chemical and Biophysical Instrumentation Center (CBIC) is a broad collection of scientific instruments for chemistry and biochemistry research, including mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography, all overseen by a professional staff. This position is for a staff scientist specializing in mass spectrometry. Under the supervision of the CBIC Director, the staff scientist will manage technical and scientific tasks essential to the mass spectrometry facility’s operations and guide projects within the research core by managing experimental design and data analysis. The position will provide training and/or guidance to core users contributing to the development of experimental protocols.
CBIC staff scientists maintain and operate the center’s instruments and provide training and support to allow researchers to operate these instruments themselves, as appropriate. This position will provide user training and expert advice, service operation and custom analyses, as well as maintenance and oversight of CBIC mass spectrometers. The staff scientist will assist with new instrument acquisitions and upgrades and provide oversight and support for other instrumentation as needed. Additionally, the staff scientist will collaborate with university research teams and faculty members on research, grants, reports, presentations, and publications to support the CBIC’s training and research missions.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Demonstrated broad knowledge and hands-on training in the theory and practice of mass spectrometry, including practical experience operating, maintaining and/or repairing mass spectrometers
2. Strong communication skills and ability to effectively train users and staff on proper procedures and methods for using mass spectrometers as well as processing and interpreting mass spectrometry data.
3. Demonstrated skill and understanding of state-of-art mass spectrometry including the ability to provide technical support for collaborative design and execution of modern mass spectrometry methods.
4. Ability to repair, maintain and modify scientific instruments. Computer skills for instrument operation and data analysis.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. PhD in Chemistry or related field
2. Good interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate working with faculty and students to assist them in operating instruments and interpreting data.
3. Knowledge and ability to work with other instrumentation such as solution biophysics and/or optical spectroscopy, including operating and maintaining these instruments and associated computers and software.
Principal Responsibilities
1. User Training: Provide advanced training and guidance to users of the research core. 2. Experiment Support: Collaborate with researchers on experimental design, execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting within the research core. 3. Facility/Instrument Support: Manage and oversee research projects within the research core. 4. Technique Development: Lead the implementation and optimization of advanced techniques and methodologies and develop standard operating procedures for research core services. 5. Data Analysis/Interpretation: Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, generating meaningful insights and recommendations. 6. Equipment Procurement: Assist in the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of research core equipment. 7. Professional Development: Stay updated with emerging research trends and technologies. Participate in professional development activities and scientific conferences. 8. Scientific Participation: Contribute scientific data for manuscript preparation and grant proposals 9. Staff Training and Mentoring: Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff members. 10. Vendor Relations: Manage vendor relationships, negotiates contracts, and evaluates new technologies for optimal procurement processes. 11. Education and Outreach: Contribute to education and outreach activities within the core, including tours, events, etc.
Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.
