POSITION SUMMARY:
The Nurse (RN or LPN) Patient Educator will utilize the nursing process to pre-operatively educate and assess orthopaedic/spine surgical patients, as well as caregivers, about their upcoming surgical procedure. In coordination with physicians, the Nurse Patient Educator will make any necessary refinements to the educational approach based on an individual patient’s physical, mental, and social needs, and pre-surgical clinical assessment. The Patient Educator will work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide patient and family education, and communication with health care providers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Responsible for assessing and educating pre-operative orthopedic patients.
· Manage patient education schedule and work collaboratively with other patient educators.
· Continually evaluate and recommend improvements to patient education program including such areas as content, method of delivery and related processes.
· Gather clinical information from the EMR and other sources to determine risks and needs (this includes a comprehensive assessment of physical, emotional, psychosocial, and environmental needs of the patient).
· Educate patient and caregiver about the process and expectations of the health care delivery system throughout the course of care including any home care and outpatient rehabilitation.
· Identify and resolve potential or actual gaps or barriers to facilitate desired post-operative outcomes.
· Document education and follow-up with others as appropriate.
· Communicate with and build strong relationships internally and with affiliated ambulatory surgery center and local hospital.
· Adhere to professional scope of practice, standards and requirements of Mississippi Board of Nursing and applicable internal policies, procedures, and direction.
· Maintain confidentiality of all patient information per HIPAA and internal guidelines.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES AND EXPERIENCE
Education
Preferred: Associate and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
Minimum: Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate
Licensure
Current unrestricted RN or LPN license in the State of Mississippi required.
Experience
ü Minimum of 1-year licensed nursing experience required.
ü Experience as RN or LPN at clinic, hospital or home-health agency required.
ü Orthopaedic related experience preferred, but not required.
ü Strong clinical, organizational, time management, and critical thinking skills.
ü Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
ü Strong problem-solving skills with a flexible and creative approach.
ü Ability to work independently yet ultimately under physician clinical supervision.
ü Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to communicate professionally and effectively with all members of the healthcare team as well as in simple, concise, and soothing language to patients and their families.
ü Computer literacy.
