Position Overview
We are seeking a creative, dependable Set Constructor / Set Designer to help design, build, and prepare scenic elements for an upcoming live production or event. This person will work with the production team to create a set that is visually strong, functional, safe, and appropriate for the performance space.
The ideal candidate has experience with scenic design, carpentry, set construction, prop building, event production, or theatrical staging. The set should support the overall look and tone of the production while also allowing for safe movement, clear sightlines, and smooth technical execution.
Responsibilities
- Design and/or construct approved set pieces for the production.
- Collaborate with the producer, director, production manager, stage manager, and technical team.
- Review stage layout, dimensions, entrances, exits, actor movement, audience sightlines, and venue requirements.
- Create practical scenic elements that fit the approved concept, schedule, and budget.
- Provide sketches, reference images, measurements, or a basic build plan when needed.
- Prepare a materials list and estimated cost before purchases are made.
- Use safe building practices and ensure all set pieces are stable and performance-ready.
- Attend required production meetings, site visits, load-in, technical rehearsals, performances, and strike as scheduled.
- Make reasonable adjustments requested by the production team for safety, design, function, or staging needs.
- Complete all assigned build work by the approved production deadline.
Ideal Candidate
- Has experience in theater, live events, scenic construction, carpentry, prop building, or production design.
- Can create clean, functional, and professional-looking scenic pieces.
- Understands basic safety, stability, and live-performance needs.
- Is organized, reliable, and able to meet deadlines.
- Can work independently while also taking direction from the production team.
- Has access to basic tools or can clearly communicate tool/material needs.
- Can provide photos or examples of previous scenic, carpentry, prop, or design work.
Preferred Skills
- Theater or live-event production experience.
- Basic drafting, sketching, or scenic layout ability.
- Experience building platforms, walls, furniture-style pieces, scenic décor, or prop elements.
- Ability to transport or assist with transporting set pieces.
- Familiarity with load-in, tech rehearsal, performance, and strike processes.
Compensation: Paid, project-based. Final rate or stipend will be discussed based on scope, experience, and production needs. Materials will be reimbursed only if approved in writing before purchase.
