Reporting to the Tax Director, the Senior Tax Accountant is responsible for preparing and reviewing tax returns, addressing moderately complex tax matters, and supporting the efficient delivery of tax engagements. This role applies advanced tax knowledge, assists with technical issues, and provides guidance to less experienced staff.
The Senior Tax Accountant exercises independent professional judgment in the preparation and review of tax work, identification of issues, and application of tax laws and regulations. This position contributes to engagement quality, supports team development, and promotes consistency in the Firm’s tax services.
Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):
Tax Preparation & Review
- Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and other entities
- Review work prepared by staff for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Ensure workpapers and documentation meet Firm standards
- Identify and resolve issues encountered during tax preparation
Technical Application & Research
- Apply tax laws and regulations to a variety of client situations
- Perform research on moderately complex tax issues and summarize conclusions
- Identify potential tax planning opportunities or risks
- Escalate complex or unusual matters to Managers or Directors as appropriate
Engagement Coordination
- Coordinate assigned work with engagement team members to support timely completion
- Assist in organizing and prioritizing tasks across multiple engagements
- Communicate progress, issues, and needs to Directors / Team Captains
- Support adherence to deadlines and deliverables
Team Support & Guidance
- Provide guidance and support to Tax Accountants and newer staff
- Review staff work and offer constructive feedback
- Assist with onboarding and training of team members
- Contribute to a collaborative and team-oriented environment
Client Interaction
- Communicate with clients to request, clarify, and follow up on information
- Respond to routine and moderately complex client questions
- Support Managers in maintaining strong client relationships
Quality & Compliance
- Promote consistency in tax preparation and documentation practices
- Ensure compliance with Firm policies, procedures, and quality standards
- Maintain organized and complete engagement files
- Stay informed on relevant tax law changes and industry developments
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required
- CPA license preferred or actively pursuing licensure
- Minimum 3–6 years of tax experience, preferably in public accounting
- Solid understanding of federal, state, and local tax regulations
- Ability to review and analyze tax returns and supporting documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to provide clear guidance and constructive feedback
- Proficiency in tax software and Microsoft Office applications
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and handling documents.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and via video conferencing.
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching in office environments.
- Ability to lift and carry light materials (generally up to 10–15 lbs), such as files, laptops, or client documentation.
Working Conditions Requirements:
- Work may be performed remotely from a home office or from Firm or client locations. The employee is expected to maintain a professional remote work environment that supports confidentiality, data security, and effective communication. Work hours may vary based on engagement demands, deadlines, and client needs.
- May involve extended periods of screen time.
- Overnight and out-of-area travel may be required for fieldwork or training. Employees may be expected to attend client meetings and/or travel beyond the regular business day.
