DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Design, develop and evaluate integrated systems for managing industrial production processes, including human work factors, quality control, logistics and material flow, cost analysis and production coordination. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of specific equipment to ensure function, reliability and transfer of knowledge between departments. Coordinate and implement quality control procedures to resolve production problems, maximize product reliability and minimize costs.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with original equipment manufacturers (OEM), leading term and condition negotiations, developing standards, and driving factory acceptance testing (FAT) standards, specifically for packaging equipment.
- Interface with customer packaging specialists on customer specific packages, and solutions to packaging needs.
- Work with rebuild team for component and system upgrades.
- Develop engineering specifications for company packaging equipment, orders and related information to obtain knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures and activities.
- Ensure commitments made to customers regarding production quality are being met by monitoring and maintaining various production standards in real time, including but not limited to process control limits, customer specifications, material variances/costs, yields, giveaway, downtime and USDA/Govt. regulations.
- Ascertain specific performance levels achieved by other organizations in the industry for comparison with same performance levels achieved by SugarCreek.
- Provide support on capital projects, including technical expertise for capabilities, options development and recommending optimal solutions for various issues.
- Provide platform expertise on a variety of packaging systems (i.e. vertical, horizontal machines) with emphasis on product quality and food safety.
- Provide current updates on latest technological developments, ensuring same are considered and evaluated for use in different applications.
- Participate in and occasionally lead cross-functional teams and ongoing meetings related to projects.
- Address specific operations issues as they arise.
- Develop and utilize key performance indicators to promote efficiency.
- Support operations with throughput analysis, mass balance issues and return-on-investment (ROI) justification.
- Work with plant maintenance for proper spares and documentation, and support OEM training needs.
- Assist R&D in developing new products on a production-level scale.
- Conduct line optimization studies and projects, yield improvement initiatives and quality improvements.
- Act as gatekeeper for process flow diagrams and mass balance studies.
- Comply with federal, state, and company policies, procedures and regulations.
- Support all safety, food quality and sanitation initiatives and policies.
- Follow Sugar Creek Packing Co. safety rules and procedures.
- Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum ten years in packaging related field, food experience preferred. Proven capital project management experience.

ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Able to apply engineering principles, techniques, procedures and equipment to the design and production of various products.
- Know how to work within established SugarCreek production teams and processes to achieve targeted performance levels while redesigning and improving upon said processes to achieve better production performance.
- Able to use past industry experience to benchmark SugarCreek performance measurements with other processes used in the industry.
- Able to measure the average level of performance with current production systems and compare to future performance levels with a variety of production capability tests to see if performance vs. standards/costs are within reason.
- Possess knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
- Know how to identify cost savings, cost avoidance and efficiency opportunities.
- Possess knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their applications.
- Able to work proficiently across various computer systems and programs, specifically AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks.
- Able to implement design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
- Able to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement optimal solutions.
- Possess strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to think and react quickly to unforeseen conditions.
- Possess knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Know how to read, write and communicate effectively to promote efficient transfer of complex information.
- Able to use critical thinking to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches to complex problems.
- Possess strong attention to detail, organizational skills and planning abilities.
- Able to work with others in a team environment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
No unusual physical requirements. Physical requirements are consistent with system engineer positions. Most physical activity will consist of standing/walking during the day, working on various machines, and at certain times sitting at a desk. Other light physical activity may be required occasionally on an as-needed basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Some work is performed in a comfortable indoor, office-like facility. Some work is performed in an indoor, manufacturing facility with close proximity to heavy and hazardous machinery. Some departments are colder temperatures between 30° and 40° F. Safety wear is required in manufacturing areas, including hard hat, hairnet, hearing protection, safety glasses, steel toe boots, coats and other necessary equipment.
