Do you sew well? Would you like to use that skill to help women with hair loss feel like themselves again? If you take pride in your work and you meet your deadlines, Lena's Wigs wants you.
At Lena's Wigs boutique studio in Hampden, we create wigs for women with hair loss. It is careful, skilled work, and a good wig gives a woman back the way she sees herself.
You do not need any wig experience — we will teach you that part. You do need to know how to sew.
What you need
- Sewing: You can sew. Either you have used an industrial sewing machine, or you have good basic sewing and tailoring skills. This is the one thing we cannot teach you here.
- Wig skills: None needed. We train you.
- Hands and eye: Close-up work, sitting down, with delicate material.
- Reliability: You show up, you meet deadlines, and you finish what you start.
- Getting here: Your own ride to our Hampden shop.
- Hours: Five days a week, 40 hours in the shop. Monday through Thursday every week, plus a fifth day. You pick the fifth day: either every Sunday, or Sunday one week and Friday the next.
- Nice to have: Spanish along with English, or any past work with hair, beauty, or other detailed handwork. Neither is required.
What you will do
- Tie hair into lace by hand, one hair at a time, to build the front of a wig. You pick the right hair and the right thickness for each piece.
- Sew, fix, and alter wig caps and lace without damaging how they are built.
- Follow each client's instructions closely, so the wig looks natural.
- Learn the rest of the work over time: color and knot bleaching, washing and styling, and keeping the shop in order.
Pay and hours
$21.00 to $26.00 an hour, depending on your skills and experience.
Shifts are 9:00 to 5:00 or 8:00 to 4:00 — we will settle which one works when you start. Each day has a 30-minute lunch break that is not paid. So you are in the shop 8 hours a day and paid for 7.5 — that comes to 37.5 paid hours a week.
