Senior Commissioning Manager – Electrical Testing & Commissioning
Position Overview
The Commissioning Manager will oversee and manage all commissioning activities related to electrical systems and equipment across assigned projects. This role is responsible for ensuring that electrical systems and components are designed, installed, tested, operated, and maintained in accordance with project specifications and client operational requirements.
The successful candidate will lead a team of commissioning engineers and technicians, coordinate with project stakeholders, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the commissioning phase of electrical projects from initial planning through execution, documentation, and final closeout.
- Ensure all commissioning activities are completed in accordance with project schedules, budgets, and contractual requirements.
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of commissioning engineers and technicians.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and support to ensure the successful execution of commissioning activities.
- Collaborate with project managers, design engineers, contractors, clients, and other stakeholders to define commissioning requirements and scope.
- Develop and implement comprehensive commissioning plans.
- Coordinate activities across multiple project teams and resolve issues that arise during the commissioning process.
- Oversee the testing, inspection, and validation of electrical systems and equipment, including transformers, switchgear, protective relays, control systems, and other critical electrical infrastructure.
- Ensure systems meet design specifications, applicable codes and standards, and client requirements.
- Ensure all commissioning documentation is accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
- Review and maintain test procedures, commissioning reports, test results, punch lists, and closeout documentation.
- Implement and enforce quality assurance processes throughout the commissioning lifecycle.
- Identify, document, and resolve non-conformities and deficiencies.
- Promote and enforce strict compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain a safe working environment for all personnel involved in commissioning activities.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients during the commissioning phase.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships and ensure client expectations are met.
- Identify opportunities to improve commissioning processes, tools, procedures, and best practices.
- Implement improvements that enhance the efficiency, quality, and effectiveness of commissioning operations.
Required Qualifications & Education
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 12+ years of experience in electrical commissioning, including at least 3–5 years in a managerial or supervisory role within the electrical industry; or
- Associate degree with 15+ years of relevant experience in electrical testing and commissioning.
- NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies)
- CCP (Certified Commissioning Professional)
- Other relevant industry certifications
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, testing procedures, and commissioning practices.
- Proficiency in the use of electrical testing equipment and related software tools.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations, including applicable sections of:
- NETA ATS/MTS
- NEC
- NFPA 70E
- Other relevant electrical and safety standards
Leadership & Communication
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage technical teams.
- Strong organizational, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to effectively coordinate with clients, contractors, engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders.
Additional Requirements
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites as required.
- Must possess valid and active U.S. work authorization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of an OEM-certified field service training program.
- Additional electrical testing, commissioning, or manufacturer-specific certifications.
