PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: This position is responsible for the major and minor service of diesel / gasoline motors and electrical systems of a variety of passenger vehicles, heavy equipment and apparatus, lawn mowers and other small engines, including regular service and minor repairs.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions
- Perform major and minor service of diesel/gasoline motors and electrical systems for fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Repair and rebuild special tools and equipment.
- Perform repairs on front end systems, steering systems, starters, transmissions, clutches, differentials, brakes and other related appurtenances.
- Perform repairs on weed eaters, chain saws, and riding mowers.
- Clean and maintain city shop.
- Maintain parts and supplies for various types of equipment and order parts as required.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records for all city equipment.
- Conduct preventive maintenance programs on all vehicles and equipment.
- Respond as necessary to after hour emergencies.
Other Functions
· Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Work is of considerable difficulty. Must exercise judgment involving matters of considerable importance; some of which will demand tact and diplomacy in maintaining positive relationship with the public, sales representatives and other city departments and employees.
- The ability to use logical thinking to solve problems.
- Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and operation of internal combustion engines and electrical systems.
- Considerable knowledge in the use and care of tools and specialized equipment utilized.
- Knowledge of the appropriate safety procedures and practices.
- Ability to maintain diesel equipment.
- Ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Skill in locating and adjusting defects in automotive equipment.
- Required to work overtime as necessary.
- Personal computer literacy.
- Reside within 20-minute drive of Concordia or within Cloud County within 6 months of employment.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION ANDEXPERIENCE
· Three years automotive mechanic experience.
· Any equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to fulfill the requirements.
· Possess a valid Class C Kansas Drivers License and an established personal driving history that is acceptable for coverage by the City’s insurance carrier.
· Possess a valid Commercial Drivers License or the ability to obtain within one year.
· Willingness to achieve an automotive professional certification during employment.

· The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit and talk or hear.
· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
