A produce clerk is responsible for ensuring the produce department delivers fresh, appealing fruits, vegetables, and related products, while maintaining food safety and supporting an excellent customer experience. This role combines attention to detail, physical activity, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Stock and Display: Stock shelves and displays with fresh produce; rotate items to ensure older stock is used first.
- Quality Control: Inspect produce regularly for freshness, removing damaged, expired, or unappealing items from shelves and displays.
- Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and organized department, including sweeping, mopping, and cleaning display racks and bins; cleanup spills and debris promptly.
- Packaging and Preparation: Package and wrap produce as needed; may prepare cut fruit, samples, or arrange displays for promotions.
- Inventory Management: Monitor and order stock, receive and check deliveries, and update pricing displays or sales tags.
- Food Safety: Practice and enforce safe and hygienic food handling procedures, including proper temperature monitoring and record-keeping.
- Customer Service: Greet and assist customers, respond to questions, and help locate items; provide recommendations and weigh or bag produce at checkout.
- Team Support: May help train new staff, assist with inventory counts, and support closing or opening procedures.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Ability to lift and carry heavy boxes and work on your feet for long periods.
- Attention to detail with a strong quality and safety mindset.
- Basic knowledge of fruits, vegetables, and store inventory practices.
- Strong communication skills and a helpful, friendly attitude.
- Previous retail, grocery, or produce-handling experience is beneficial.
