IDEA Public Charter School, located in the historic Deanwood neighborhood in Northeast Washington, D.C., serves approximately 330 students in grades 9–12. Position Overview:
The Behavior Intervention Specialist plays a vital role in fostering a positive, orderly, and supportive school environment. This position is responsible for helping students develop the behavioral, emotional, and social skills necessary for success in school and beyond. The specialist manages the school’s Behavior Intervention Room, providing a structured and restorative space for students to reflect on their choices, receive targeted support, and re-enter classrooms ready to learn. Working closely with teachers, counselors, and administrators, the Behavior Intervention Specialist identifies patterns and root causes of behavior, designs and implements individualized intervention plans, and monitors student progress. Through consistent guidance, relationship-building, and evidence-based interventions, the specialist helps students make positive behavioral changes, strengthens school culture, and supports overall student engagement and achievement.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage the Behavior Intervention Room, ensuring it operates as a structured, restorative, and supportive environment.
- Supervise students assigned to the space, guiding them through reflection, accountability, and behavior-modification activities.
- Identify behavioral antecedents and collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to design and implement individualized behavior intervention plans.
- Facilitate restorative conversations and re-entry processes to help students successfully return to class.
- Track and analyze behavioral data to identify trends, measure progress, and inform schoolwide intervention strategies.
- Support classroom teachers in implementing proactive classroom-management and behavior-support practices.
- Communicate regularly with families to reinforce behavioral expectations and celebrate growth.
- Contribute to a positive school culture by promoting equity, consistency, and respect in all student interactions.
- Maintain accurate records of assignments, incidents, and student progress.
- Monitors hallways during the school day when needed, supports lunch duty when needed

Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; experience in education, counseling, or related fields may be considered.
- Previous experience working with high school age youth
- Strong communication, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills
- Ability to learn quickly and well
Compensation:
Annual Salary: $60,000 - $65,000
Benefits: health, dental, vision, and life insurance
FLSA: full time, exempt, 12 month
