General Statement of Duties:
The Animal Shelter Technician performs work related to the operation and maintenance of the animal shelter, provides assistance to the public on matters concerning animals, under general supervision provides for the humane care and treatment of animals in the care of the North Utah Valley Animal Shelter, provides clerical support as required, maintains records; performs related work as required.
Job Summary:
Performs work involving the operation of a computer, calculator, copy machine, multiple line telephone, and other standard office equipment. Incumbents in this position perform general record keeping, public assistance, clerical duties to include data entry, records processing and maintenance, word processing, filing, record keeping; also to provide for the humane care and treatment of animals housed at the shelter, evaluation of dogs and cats, kennel maintenance and upkeep, public service and assistance related to animal services; performs related work as required.
Supervision Received:
Work is performed under the direction of the North Utah Valley Animal Shelter Director, who reviews work primarily on the basis of results attained and adherence to established policies and procedures.
Description of Duties: Specific duties include the following:
Organizes, files, and catalogs materials
Data entry and management regarding animal bite reports, lost animals, license applications
Prepare, copy, and file reports, documents, records, and bulletins
Makes copies, collates, and assembles information
Answers telephones and provides general information responses to inquiries
Greets customers and performs customer service
Gathers information from the public necessary to initiate records and services
Respond to public inquiries concerning animal shelter policies and procedures
Intake of unlicensed, stray, and uncontrolled animals
Process animals turned in by owners
Performs shelter maintenance including the feeding and care of animals and the cleaning and sanitation of the kennels, cages, and enclosures
Issues animal licenses; receives payments for fees and issues receipts
Euthanizes animals as necessary
Vaccinates animals as necessary
Grooms and cleans animals as necessary
Evaluates animal behavior and makes recommendations
Conducts evaluations of animals regarding general condition and obvious health concerns
Moves animals into holding cages and kennels
Count and balance monies received and check against daily receipts for accuracy
Inventory of shelter supplies and equipment
Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below outline the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Requires a working knowledge of safe and humane animal handling methods; familiarity with animal euthanasia; working knowledge of domestic canine and feline breed identification; knowledge of animal behavior - specifically domesticated animals; knowledge of state and county laws and regulations regarding animal control; knowledge of proper methods to clean and sanitize animal cages, kennels, and enclosures; knowledge of up to date office practices and procedures; knowledge of various office filing systems including alphabetical, numerical, and chronological systems; knowledge of correct usage of the English language including proper spelling and punctuation. Experience administering vaccines and medications to animals specifically dogs and cats; ability to humanely euthanize animals as required, ability to handle large, out of control animals; effectively work with the public and others in high stress situations and ability to resolve potentially volatile situations; ability to effectively manage aggressive and/or infectious animals, ability to properly organize files, documents, and data; ability to maintain accurate reports, records and inventories, ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the general public.
Educations and/or Experience:
Must possess high school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of one year experience working directly with animals in a professional and/or organizational setting preferably in the animal control and/or animal shelter field. Minimum of one year experience working directly with the general public in a customer service capacity.
Background Investigation/Drug Screen:
Those employed in this position will be subject to a background investigation including a criminal background investigation. Must have no illegal drug use/convictions within the last three years. Final candidates will be required to pass drug screen prior to hire.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Appearance:
Requires the possession of a valid Utah driver s license and a good driving record. Department policy does not allow tattoos, body piercing, or branding to be visible while in uniform or at anytime when the employee is identifiable as a member of the department. Incumbent will be required to obtain a euthanasia certification.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift; and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Requires the ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; requires the ability to exert moderate to extensive amount of physical effort involving stooping, crouching, climbing, and lifting.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office, animal shelter, and outdoor environment. Incumbents are required to euthanize animals and are involved in the handling of potentially vicious and unruly animals. The position is impacted by the necessity of uncontrollable workflow, the need to make quick decisions, and involves frequent interruptions.
Individual starting salary will depend on qualifications, certifications, and experience. The City also provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package.
