Nail Technician Job Description
Overview
The Medical Nail Technician (MNT) plays a vital role in the delivery of specialized foot and nail care within a podiatry office. This advanced-level position blends clinical standards with cosmetology skills to provide safe, hygienic toenail trimming and foot care services to patients with complex medical needs, including diabetes, fungal infections, thickened or dystrophic nails, and geriatric foot concerns.
This position is distinct from a traditional nail technician role by requiring clinical training, medical oversight, and infection control proficiency aligned with podiatric healthcare standards.
Duties
- Perform toenail trimming, reduction, and basic non-invasive foot care as directed by the podiatrist.
- Maintain high standards of sanitation and cleanliness in accordance with state regulations and follow strict sterilization procedures for autoclaved instruments and medical PPE.
- Assist in identifying changes in nail or skin health that require medical evaluation.
- Document services performed and patient responses in alignment with medical charting protocols.
- Support patient education on basic foot hygiene and at-home nail care.
- Collaborate with podiatry staff in maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment.
- Participate in ongoing education and quarterly clinical reviews.
- Apply knowledge of color theory to assist clients in selecting the perfect shades for their nails and the correct product for diabetic patients.
- Provide excellent customer service by actively listening to client needs and offering personalized recommendations.
- Assist clients with retail sales by promoting products that enhance their nail care routine.
Requirements
- Valid State cosmetology license or certification in nail technology.
- 8 hours of hands-on toenail trimming performed under direct supervision of a licensed podiatrist once employed with Family Foot and Ankle Physicians (documentation required).
- Demonstrated knowledge of the following once trained with Family Foot and Ankle Physicians:
- Onychomycosis, onychogryphosis, and other nail pathologies
- Diabetic foot considerations
- Infection control and universal precautions
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially with elderly or medically complex patients.
Preferred
- Experience working in a podiatry or medical office setting.
- CPR/BLS certification.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Contract
Base Pay: $400.00 - $800.00 per week
