Primary Work Location:
This position supports multiple Cardea Health Interim Housing Programs and requires regular travel between assigned locations.
Cardea's interim housing programs provide temporary housing, stabilization services, clinical support, care coordination, case management, and connections to permanent housing opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Employees in these roles should expect frequent collaboration with residents, healthcare providers, social service agencies, community partners, and multidisciplinary teams.
Job Summary:
The Maintenance Associate is an entry-level facilities role designed for individuals interested in learning the facilities maintenance trade. Working under the guidance of experienced Facilities Technicians and Senior Facilities Technicians, the Maintenance Associate receives training, coaching, and hands-on experience while supporting maintenance operations across Cardea Health properties.
The ideal candidate is hands-on, reliable, and eager to learn. This position is well-suited for individuals looking to build foundational skills in facilities maintenance while contributing to mission-driven work serving vulnerable populations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Complete assigned work orders using the MaintainX mobile app
Prepare rooms for new residents by completing basic repairs and touch-ups
Paint walls, patch holes, caulk, and perform minor drywall repairs
Unclog toilets and drains and complete other basic plumbing tasks
Replace light bulbs, air filters, smoke detector batteries, and other routine maintenance items
Assemble furniture, shelving, office furniture, and equipment
Move furniture, appliances, supplies, and equipment between rooms and properties
Install simple hardware such as shelves, towel bars, curtain rods, and signs
Help keep maintenance shops, storage rooms, company vehicles, and work areas clean and organized
Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies
Pick up and deliver parts, tools, and supplies between Cardea Health locations.
Assist Facilities Technicians with larger repairs and special projects
Perform basic preventative maintenance and report anything needing additional repair
Help maintain the exterior of properties by picking up litter, pressure washing, light landscaping, and general cleanup
Follow safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Record completed work in MaintainX
Respond to emergency maintenance needs when requested
Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
No prior maintenance experience is required
Must be at least 18 years old
Valid California Driver License with an acceptable driving record
Reliable personal vehicle available for travel between Cardea Health locations
Current automobile insurance
Willingness to learn and work with your hands
Comfortable using a smartphone or tablet to receive and complete work orders
Reliable, dependable, and able to work independently after training
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in janitorial, hospitality, apartment maintenance, construction, warehouse, landscaping, or general labor.
Experience using basic hand tools.
Experience working in supportive housing, healthcare, hospitality, or similar environments.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires significant mobility and regular presence within program environments.
Essential physical activities may include:
Frequent standing and walking throughout housing sites.
Responding to program or participant needs in various environments.
Navigating stairways, hallways, outdoor spaces, and community settings.
Assisting with program operations, room preparation, supply movement, or emergency response activities.
Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and crouching.
Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work Environment:
Cardea Health program locations operate within supportive housing, interim housing, medical respite, and community-based environments serving individuals experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable populations.
