Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Director is a member of the department’s Residence Life Leadership Team who supervises, leads, and develops staff and provides vision/direction for specific content areas in the Residence Life unit.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
- The Associate Director for Academic Initiatives and Staff Programs provides supervision and development for full-time, master ’s-level Assistant Directors, as well as the professional and student staff assigned to their areas.
- Additionally, the Associate Director will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for Residence Life recruitment, selection, and training programs at the professional, graduate, and undergraduate student levels, as well as guiding departmental initiatives related to the implementation of the Residential Curriculum and LC program partnership.
- The Associate Director is a member of the department’s Residence Life Leadership Team. The Associate Director will also serve as a departmental representative on assigned University and Division of Student Affairs committees.
- This position will be responsible for working with and assisting the Division of Student Affairs and Housing and Residence Life with gathering research, creating reports, and all assessment efforts related to Residence Life. The Associate Director reports to the Director of Residence Life.
Minimum Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (ideally in higher education, counseling, and/or student personnel, or a related field).
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive professional experience in campus housing, student affairs, or a related field.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience supervising graduate or professional staff.
- Experience serving in on-call response and/or in crisis management.
- Experience with the recruitment, selection, training, and ongoing development of full-time and student staff.
- Experience with Human Resource functions.
- Experience with coordinating Learning Community programs or Academic Initiatives.
- Experience supervising graduate and professional staff.

- Experience with Residential Curriculum.
