POSITION SUMMARY
Pavement Repair
The incumbent in this position is responsible for supervising the repair and maintenance of paved roads within the County.
Right-Of-Way Maintenance
The incumbent in this position is responsible for supervising road improvement personnel and operating equipment used to maintain roads and drainage systems.
Signage
The incumbent in this position is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all county road signs.
Vegetation Maintenance
The incumbent in this position is responsible for maintaining all county right-of-ways. All work by the above positions is performed outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather. The incumbent is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, and machinery.
This position reports to the Roads & Bridges Department Managers and/or Supervisors
Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having a similar position for two to three years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Pavement Repair

Supervises personnel responsible for and assists in maintaining paved roads, including the repair of pavement failures, cracks, water cuts, etc.

Prepares daily reports on labor, equipment and material used in maintaining paved roads.

Operates trucks and heavy equipment used in maintaining dirt and paved roads, and transporting materials.

Repairs storm boxes, drain pipes, fences, etc.
Right-Of-Way Maintenance

Supervises road improvement personnel involved in clearing and grading roads, roughing out ditch lines and slopes, and hauling road material such as dirt, rock and asphalt.

Operates heavy equipment such as dump truck, grader, loader and bulldozer that are used to maintain roads and transport materials.

Clears underbrush and trees from around bridges, ditches, etc.

Maintains ditches and other drainage systems including the laying of cross-drain pipes on dirt roads.

Repairs shoulders on roads and prepares roads for patching crew.

Remains on call after work hours to handle emergencies such as downed trees on roads, fallen signs, and road washouts.

Supervises county personnel involved in the installation and maintenance of county road signs.

Installs and maintains county road signs and street markers, including the removal of underbrush from around signs.

Installs pavement markings.

Paints and stencils concrete street markers.

Cleans and maintains storm water boxes.

Installs rip rap in ditches to prevent erosion.

Operates equipment used to haul and dump material.
Vegetation Maintenance

Supervises personnel responsible for mowing right-of-ways along all county roads.

Operates equipment used to clear underbrush growing on right of ways along all county roads.

Operates equipment used to repair and replace drains.
-
Operates equipment used to level roads and other area.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of state and county policies and procedures concerning method of placement and location of county road signs.

Knowledge of winter traffic control.

Skill in operating machines and equipment such as hand tools, motor auger, dump truck, etc. used in maintaining road signs.
Vegetation Maintenance

Knowledge of county policies and procedures concerning clearing of right-of-ways along county roads.

Skill in operating such equipment as tractors, mowers, back hoes, and motor graders.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having a similar position for two to three years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated. A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
