Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM
Location: Middlefield Parks and Recreation Summer Camp
Position Summary
The Camp Counselor is responsible for helping create a safe, welcoming, active, and fun summer camp experience for children. Counselors supervise campers throughout the day, lead and support activities, help manage group routines, and serve as positive role models. This position requires energy, patience, reliability, good judgment, and a genuine interest in working with children outdoors in a camp setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Camp Counselor will:
- Supervise campers at all times and maintain a safe, positive group environment.
- Lead and assist with camp activities, games, crafts, nature activities, sports, quiet time, waterfront preparation, and special events.
- Help campers follow daily routines, including arrival, dismissal, snack, lunch, quiet time, transitions, and group activities.
- Actively engage with campers throughout the day rather than standing aside or using personal devices.
- Support campers’ social and emotional needs with patience, encouragement, and clear expectations.
- Help manage behavior using positive, age-appropriate strategies.
- Communicate concerns about camper safety, behavior, health, or wellbeing to the Camp Director or Assistant Director.
- Assist with setup, cleanup, and organization of camp spaces and supplies.
- Follow all camp safety procedures, including attendance checks, bathroom procedures, emergency protocols, and waterfront safety expectations.
- Maintain professional boundaries and appropriate conduct with campers, families, and coworkers.
- Wear the required camp uniform or staff identification as directed.
- Attend required staff training and participate in daily staff communication.
- Be prepared to work outdoors in a variety of summer weather conditions.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children preferred.
- Must be dependable, responsible, and able to work as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate respectfully with children, families, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Ability to follow directions and respond appropriately in busy or changing situations.
- Must be able to actively supervise children and participate in camp activities.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to complete required training.
- Must successfully complete any required background checks and onboarding requirements.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, move around outdoor and indoor camp spaces, participate in games and activities, lift or carry light supplies, and work outdoors in heat and typical summer conditions.
Work Environment
Camp Counselors work in a busy youth program environment with indoor and outdoor activities. The position involves regular interaction with children, families, other counselors, camp leadership, and Parks and Recreation staff.
