Day Gemma House Manager
The Gemma Project is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and trauma-responsive Day Time House Manager to help create a safe, supportive, and healing environment for women transitioning from incarceration back into the community.
The Gemma Project is a female-led nonprofit dedicated to providing and promoting the national creation of gender-responsive reentry programming for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women. We believe healing occurs through safety, dignity, accountability, relationships, and consistent support.

Physical Requirements:
This Day Time position is designed to provide consistent structure, support, and supervision during residents' primary waking hours. The Day Time House Manager serves as the central point of contact within the home, fostering a safe, welcoming, and trauma-responsive environment while residents navigate daily responsibilities and work toward their Wellness & Reentry Plan goals.
The Day Time House Manager's primary work schedule is 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, during which they are actively engaged in resident support, household operations, appointments, documentation, coordination with the Continuing Care Coordinators and Residence Director, meal planning, and maintaining the overall functioning of the house.
At 4:00 PM, responsibility for active supervision transitions to the Overnight House Manager. The Day Time House Manager is then off duty until the beginning of the next scheduled shift.
Relationship with the Overnight House Manager
Although each position has distinct responsibilities, both House Managers are equal partners in creating the Gemma House culture. Together they model the values of dignity, respect, accountability, compassion, and hope. Every interaction—whether assisting with breakfast, resolving a disagreement, sharing an evening meal, celebrating a success, or responding to a crisis—is viewed as an opportunity to reinforce healthy relationships and support each resident's journey toward permanent housing and independent living.
This position requires access to sensitive and protected data and therefore may require but is not limited to completion of Live Scan fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to hire. This position requires the ability to safely respond to emergencies, ability to climb stairs, conduct periodic house walkthroughs, and occasionally assist residents with lifting or moving items. Current California driver's license, registration, and insurance are also required.
The schedule may include weekends, holidays, and rotating coverage as needed.

The Gemma Day House Manager’s primary role is to create a safe, structured, and supportive environment for women transitioning from incarceration back into the community. The person in this role understands that reentry is complex and that healing, accountability, and stability develop over time through consistent support, clear expectations, and strong relationships.
You will thrive in this role if you are someone who can balance compassion with structure. You understand the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries while building trust with residents who may have experienced significant trauma, system involvement, and instability. You are comfortable addressing challenges directly, modeling accountability, and supporting residents as they learn to navigate responsibilities such as employment, supervision requirements, and independent living.
This position requires someone who is collaborative and solutions-oriented. You will work closely with Gemma staff, probation and parole partners, and community providers to ensure residents have access to resources and support as they move toward greater stability. You are organized, communicative, and able to manage both the day-to-day operations of the house and the relational dynamics that arise within a shared living environment.
Most importantly, you believe in the potential of justice-involved women and are committed to creating a space where residents can build confidence, practice new skills, and move forward with dignity and accountability.
This position reports to the Residence Director.
What you'll do:
- Provide oversight of all aspects of gender and trauma responsive transitional house for justice-involved women.
- Complete orientation with all new residents.
- Build rapport and trust with Gemma residents through individual and group interactions.
- Model and reinforce program rules, procedures, phases and guidelines and be able to explain to residents.
- Model and reinforce foundational behaviors of program.
- Model and reinforce healthy and consistent boundaries.
- Provide encouragement and reinforcement of agreements.
- Check in with clients daily.
- Administer Drug/Alcohol Tests
- Attend and actively engage in Gemma Team Meetings
- Initiate and/or carry out administrative duties, tracking tasks, and repair needs of the house.
- Document and report any inappropriate, odd or unsafe behavior in Daily Report.
- Safeguard and distribute prescription narcotic medications to residents as necessary.
- Assist in grocery shopping.
- Determine and monitor eligibility and approval of resident passes and privileges.
- Be available and prepared to handle questions and problems as they arise.
- Periodically transport residents to appointments and meetings as appropriate.
- Assist residents in the completion of required paperwork as appropriate.
- Respond to email and voicemail regularly throughout shifts.
- Actively collaborate and coordinate with the Gemma Team.
- Complete written Daily Reports at the end of each day.
- Be prepared for and participate in shift overlap for exchange of information.
- Complete daily shift tasks thoroughly and accurately.
- Contact Residence Director and/or Executive Director in the event of an urgent or emergency matter.
- Be prepared for and actively engage in transition from day to night house manager to ensure continuity of care for residents.

- Demonstrated knowledge of health, housing, or economic mobility (including workforce development and education) policy and programs a plus
- Experience and fluency in Google Workspace software programs, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- Demonstrated ability to maintain clear professional and personal boundaries
- Bilingual/bicultural (English/Spanish) preferred
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work well with formerly incarcerated women 18+ years old
- Life, professional, or educational experience working with unhoused incarcerated, or individuals struggling with addictive behaviors and behavioral health challenges
- Strong understanding of addictive behavior, and harm reduction
- Educational training or lived experience in social work, psychology, addiction studies, sociology or similar
- Exceptional personal and professional boundaries
- Ability to use good judgment and work independently
- Excellent Motivational Interviewing, nonviolent communication, conflict resolution and listening skills
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize activities
- Knowledge of community and government resources and services
- Understanding of issues of poverty and cultural responsivity; commitment to the goal of empowerment of low-income, formerly incarcerated persons from all backgrounds to become self-reliant
- Ability to represent Gemma in a professional manner
- Experience with Google Workspace software programs, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- Safe driving record and current California driver’s license, and ability to drive a personal car in the transaction of agency business
- Bilingual/Bicultural (Spanish) preferred

Compensation The Gemma Project believes that pay equity and pay transparency advance workplace fairness. Pay for this position is 22$/hour plus full health, vision, and dental benefits, 14 days of PTO annually plus holidays, and employer contribution to retirement.
