Required Knowledge and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of United States history, world history, civics, government, geography, and related social studies disciplines appropriate to the grade levels taught.
- Ability to provide engaging, age-appropriate instruction that develops students’ knowledge of history while strengthening critical thinking, reading, writing, research, and communication skills.
- Ability to teach social studies in alignment with school and New Jersey curriculum standards while incorporating primary sources, current events, historical documents, and relevant real-world connections.
- Ability to create a classroom environment that encourages thoughtful discussion, respectful debate, intellectual curiosity, and appreciation for different historical perspectives.
- Ability to help students analyze sources, identify bias and perspective, evaluate evidence, and construct well-supported arguments.
- Ability to make history and civics relevant to students by connecting historical events and ideas to contemporary issues and the responsibilities of citizenship.
- Ability to effectively manage a classroom and maintain a positive, structured, and engaging learning environment.
- Ability to collaborate with administration and faculty to support student growth and meet school-wide academic and formation goals.
- Members of the Catholic faith are preferred, with a willingness to support and integrate the mission and values of Catholic education into instruction and classroom life.
Duties Include:
- Prepare and deliver engaging, standards-aligned Social Studies lessons appropriate to the assigned grade levels.
- Teach students to understand significant historical events, people, movements, ideas, and institutions while developing an appreciation for the lessons history offers for the present and future.
- Incorporate primary and secondary sources, maps, historical documents, multimedia resources, literature, and other instructional materials to deepen student understanding.
- Develop students’ abilities to read critically, evaluate evidence, recognize bias and perspective, conduct research, and communicate historical arguments effectively.
- Facilitate classroom discussions and respectful debates that encourage students to listen thoughtfully, ask meaningful questions, and support their ideas with evidence.
- Connect social studies content to current events, civic responsibility, and real-world issues in an age-appropriate manner.
- Assess student learning through quizzes, tests, writing assignments, projects, discussions, and other appropriate measures, providing timely and constructive feedback.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, assignments, and academic progress.
- Establish and maintain a classroom environment that is orderly, respectful, academically challenging, and supportive of all students.
- Encourage students through positive reinforcement, high expectations, constructive feedback, and individualized support.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, effort, behavior, and academic development.
- Collaborate with fellow teachers and administration to support interdisciplinary learning and school-wide academic initiatives.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and other activities as scheduled.
- Support the mission and Catholic identity of St. Matthias School by modeling Christian values and helping students understand the dignity, responsibility, and moral obligations associated with citizenship and participation in society.
- Complete special projects during and after school hours as assigned.
- Follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Faculty Handbook, Parent-Student Handbook, and school guidelines.
- Perform all additional duties as assigned by administration.
Qualifications:
- Valid New Jersey Teaching Certification in Social Studies or eligibility for immediate certification, with demonstrated ability to plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction.
- Strong knowledge of history, civics, government, geography, and related social studies disciplines.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills, including the ability to maintain a structured yet engaging learning environment.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and meet the academic needs of students with a range of abilities and learning styles.
- Ability to assess student learning fairly and effectively and communicate academic progress to students and parents.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a faculty and school community.
- Commitment to the mission of Catholic education and the ability to integrate Catholic values, respect for human dignity, moral reasoning, and responsible citizenship into the Social Studies classroom.
- Part-time position; schedule and teaching assignment to be determined based on school needs and candidate availability.
Pay: From $20,000.00 per year
