A general mechanic's job is to perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and installation work on vehicles, machinery, and equipment. Their responsibilities include:
- Test driving: Checking repairs by driving the vehicle
- Updating records: Keeping accurate records of work performed
- Maintaining equipment: Cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting tools and machinery
- Following safety guidelines: Abiding by safety policies and procedures
- Communicating with clients: Explaining problems and repairs to clients
