Forklift Operator / Material Handler
Pay: $21.50 per hour
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:45 PM
Overtime: May be required before or after scheduled shift.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Forklift Operator / Material Handler to join our team. Qualified candidates must have experience operating a sit-down forklift and loading/unloading trucks in an industrial environment. Experience handling large steel coils, long materials, or heavy industrial products is highly preferred.
This position plays a key role in safely moving materials throughout our facility, supporting production, and ensuring accurate outbound shipments.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate a sit-down powered industrial forklift.
- Complete and submit daily forklift safety inspections.
- Load and unload trucks, trailers, and railcars safely and efficiently.
- Move materials between the yard, warehouse, breakdown area, and production lines.
- Prepare, pull, stage, and accurately pick customer orders within established productivity standards:
- Simple loads: 20 minutes
- Standard loads: 30 minutes
- Complex loads: 45 minutes
- Pick, sort, and process material orders using computer-based instructions.
- Verify shipment accuracy and inspect loads for quality before they leave the facility.
- Coordinate with inbound and outbound trucking personnel for pickups and deliveries.
- Transport steel coils to production lines safely and efficiently.
- Safely unload slit coils using designated lifting baskets.
- Properly store steel coils in assigned storage rows.
- Maintain organized storage areas and follow all material handling procedures.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
Training
New employees will begin as a Machine Operator Assistant to become familiar with materials, product identification, labels, coil locations, and facility processes before transitioning into all forklift responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating a sit-down forklift in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Experience loading and unloading trucks is required.
- Ability to safely handle large, heavy materials.
- Experience moving materials up to 60 feet long.
- Experience handling steel coils weighing up to 15 tons preferred.
- Experience unloading railcars preferred.
- Ability to read work instructions and use a computer to process orders.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
- Reliable attendance and the ability to work overtime as needed.
Work Environment
This position is in a steel manufacturing facility. Candidates must be comfortable working in:
- Loud industrial conditions
- Hot temperatures
- Dusty and dirty environments
- A physically demanding setting requiring frequent forklift operation and material handling
