Purpose of Classification
The internship program is designed to provide an overview of the various components of an urban police department, including, but not limited to, patrol operations, criminal investigations, administration and training. Through student internships the Department provides opportunities for college undergraduates and graduates to participate in, learn, and directly observed law enforcement activities in an effort to encourage their interest in employment with the Department. The program format is relatively flexible to accommodate the educational needs of the intern, the requirements of the intern’s college or university, and the commitments of the Department.
Essential Functions
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statement of the duties does not excluded term from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Support Neighborhood Watch and community events with outreach materials and resident feedback collection; Assist in crime-prevention campaigns, producing safety flyers and conducing CPTED walk-throughs with supervision; Observe and learn 911 communications, patrol operations, and administrative coordination under controlled, non-enforcement settings; Develop a Community Safety Starter Kit, an Event Playbook, and a Lessons-Learned reflection documenting internship outcome; Engage with the public under supervision to enhance transparency and service quality.

Minimum Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age or older; currently enrolled in an accredited college or university program which awards credit for participation in an internship program; or dual enrolled high school Sr.; must have the approval of the concerned college or university faculty advisor or sponsor; must pass a routine background check; agree to a waiver of liability as required by the Department; and have a flexible schedule to work irregular hours when needed.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of color, sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
