Program Overview
The Black Hawk Area Education Center (often called "The Center") is a specialized public day
school operated by BHASED. It serves students ages 3–22 from 14 member school districts
who require highly structured environments and specialized support. The Center provides an
integrated approach to student development, including academic & therapeutic support, as well
as life skills & vocational training.
Position Summary
The BHAEC Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, specialized instruction in a
structured therapeutic environment. This role requires a collaborative approach to addressing
the complex academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students, ensuring alignment
with their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and the mission of supporting student success
within their communities.
Responsibilities
? Follow and implement all aspects of special education programming (i.e. IEP goals and
objectives, BIPs, data collection and analysis, etc.)
? Develop and implement quality instruction that is aligned to student needs and directly
addresses goals and objectives as stated on the IEP.
? Utilize appropriate, differentiated instructional strategies to address the diverse
academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students.
? Review and revise assigned IEPs annually, ensuring strict adherence to the scope and
sequence of each student’s goals.
? Maintain ongoing assessments, providing up-to-date data, progress reports, and report
cards for every student.
? Maintain a social and emotional climate that is conducive to effective instruction.
? Support the development of students' physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and
behavioral needs.
? Exercise sound judgment when navigating student behaviors and complex
problem-solving situations.
? Experience with Behavior 360 Inclusive Schooling is preferred.
? Foster a safe, positive, and affirming teaching and learning environment that promotes
student confidence and independence.
? Build and maintain professional rapport with students, staff, administration, parents,
member district personnel, and community stakeholders.
? Actively participate (and possibly lead) meetings with support staff to discuss program
needs and monitor student progress.
? Actively participate in professional development activities designed to improve instruction
and promote student success.
? Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct on an ongoing basis.
? Present and maintain appropriate Illinois teacher licensure in accordance with the Illinois
State Board of Education.
? Demonstrate full knowledge of and compliance with all federal, state, and local
regulations, codes, and guidelines.
? Collaborate effectively with paraprofessional staff, guiding them in classroom activities,
goal documentation, and the monitoring of student achievements.
? Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Phoenix Program Principal.

? Experience working with students with Autism and other significant disabilities is
preferred.
? Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
? Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders.
