Job Overview
Provide assistance to Community Development Services (CDS). The CDS Department is offering an
exciting internship opportunity for a motivated individual interested in gaining hands-on experience
in one of the following areas:
1. Engineering
2. Planning
3. Building
4. GIS (Geographic Information System)

Duties
- Compliance with the Code of Conduct and Ethics as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Perform standard office tasks including data entry, file management, answering telephone and responding to e-mails.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Attends staff and public meetings to learn more about the interactions of municipal government.
Engineering:
- Reviews residential, commercial and industrial development plans and makes on-site inspection for compliance withlocal ordinances/codes.
- Conducts studies regarding traffic control, signage, stormwater, sanitary sewer, and related issues under the direction of the City Engineer.
- Inspects various City projects during and after construction to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications, and periodically performs on-site surveys as assigned.
- Review, approves, and inspects street cut permits under the direction of the Senior Field Inspector.
- Supports the City Engineer, Senior Technician, Senior Field Inspector, and Field Inspector in performance of duties
Planning:
- Reviews site plans and zoning permit applications to assure compliance with requirements such as use, bulk, placement, and parking ratios. Assist Planners with staff reports.
- Contribute to a range of planning projects, including assessing community zoning and land use conditions, researching planning topics, supporting citizen engagement and zoning enforcing efforts, and sign permit/sign enforcement.
Building:
- Assist Building Commissioner with various functions as assigned, such as permit application intake, conducting building and architectural plan review, issuing building permits and inspecting buildings during and after construction.
- Assist construction contractors and the public with understanding and following building codes and City ordinances, and disseminating information orally and in writing as requested.
Experience
- Previous experience or coursework in volunteer management, social work, public health, or related fields is preferred.
- Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience in volunteer or team settings.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences through public speaking or presentations.
- Experience with program development, project management, or event planning is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in marketing strategies and social media management tools to effectively promote initiatives.
- Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data for reporting purposes.
- Administrative experience including recruiting volunteers or managing records is a plus.
GIS
- Integrate data from aerial imagery, as-built drawings and field data collection to provide users with accurate maps and attribute information.
- Perform routine GIS data entry, maintenance and quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and completeness of data.
- Produce maps and other analytic products in response to requests from City staff and public.
Job Requirements:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED. Pursuing a bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, or related field (Engineering Internship Only).
- Experience: Entry level. No Experience required. Previous knowledge and interest in field is preferred.
- Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision, prioritize and work on multiple tasks concurrently, and possess a valid Indiana driver’s license. Competency in various computer software programs, such as Microsoft Office and Internet applications.
- Physical: Must be able to sit for long periods of time and be able to lift up to 45 pounds.
