Job Description and Duties

This position is for the Department of State Hospitals - Coalinga, located in Coalinga, CA.
Under direction, is responsible for the overall management and supervision of an organized nursing unit on a 24-hour basis in a State hospital providing care to forensic clients or patients who are developmentally or mentally disordered offenders; is responsible for the nursing care and practices of an organized nursing unit or for a nursing service; plans, implements, evaluates, and provides for continuity of forensic client or patient care; works with other disciplines to integrate nursing services to provide a total treatment program; and teaches, plans, directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing personnel.

Working Conditions

The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital and may be required to work overtime and float to other work locations as determined by the operational needs of the hospital.

Department Information

DSH-Coalinga opened in 2005 and began treating forensically committed patients, mostly of which are sexually violent predators. It is a self-contained psychiatric hospital constructed with a security perimeter. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) provides perimeter security as well as transportation of patients to outside medical services and court proceedings.

All state civil service employees are currently subject to a mandatory Personal Leave Program (PLP). The PLP program reduces the monthly gross salary but provides paid leave options (PLO) leave credits in lieu of pay. The amount of salary reduction depends on the classification and associated union Bargaining Unit (BU). The BU that represents this position is BU17 and is represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The expected salary reduction will be 3% of the salary identified above, and you will accrue 5 hours of PLP each qualifying pay period. Incumbents will be subject to the PLP salary reduction and leave accruals through June 30, 2027. Positions with time bases that are less than full time will receive a prorated accrual of PLP that’s based on number of hours worked during the pay period.
