Position Summary
The Procurement / Buyer is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and managing raw materials, tooling, components, supplies, and outside services required to support daily manufacturing operations at the Bethel facility.
This role plays a critical part in maintaining material availability, managing supplier performance, controlling costs, and preventing production disruptions. The ideal candidate is highly organized, responsive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with changing production priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Procurement & Purchasing
- Purchase raw materials, including aluminum, stainless steel, nickel alloys, specialty metals, and other production materials.
- Procure tooling, machine consumables, dies, jigs, fixtures, packaging materials, and other manufacturing supplies.
- Issue and maintain purchase orders and related purchasing documentation in Epicor ERP.
- Monitor supplier lead times and proactively expedite materials and services to prevent production delays.
- Purchase MRO supplies supporting CNC equipment, hydraulic presses, robotics, tool room, and general facility operations.
- Ensure purchasing activities comply with applicable quality, customer, ITAR, and supplier certification requirements.
Supplier Management
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with material suppliers, machine shops, heat treaters, plating suppliers, tooling vendors, and other outside processors.
- Negotiate pricing, lead times, payment terms, and volume agreements to support cost and operational objectives.
- Monitor supplier performance, including quality, on-time delivery, responsiveness, and overall service.
- Address shortages, late deliveries, quality concerns, and other supplier issues in a timely manner.
- Identify and qualify alternate suppliers when needed to reduce risk and improve supply continuity.
Inventory & Materials Coordination
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of raw materials, tooling components, and production consumables.
- Collaborate closely with Production, Scheduling, Engineering, Quality, and the Tool Room to ensure material readiness.
- Track open purchase orders, expected delivery dates, shortages, and material receipts to support production planning.
- Participate in cycle counts and assist with identifying root causes of inventory discrepancies.
- Proactively communicate material risks or delays that could affect production schedules.
ERP & Documentation
- Accurately enter and maintain purchase orders, supplier information, pricing, and related purchasing data in Epicor.
- Maintain organized procurement records to support AS9100, ITAR, customer, and internal audit requirements.
- Ensure required supplier documentation, including certifications, Certificates of Conformance (COCs), and material or test reports, is obtained and maintained as required.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records and documentation in accordance with company procedures.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with Quality to address nonconforming materials and supplier quality issues, including corrective actions when required.
- Participate in production and operational meetings to communicate material status and escalate shortages or supplier concerns.
- Work closely with Production and Scheduling to respond to changing priorities and urgent material requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, including Lean, 6S, cost reduction, and process improvement activities.
Financial & Administrative Support
- Assist Finance with invoice discrepancies, purchase order/invoice matching, and purchasing-related cost questions.
- Review pricing and purchasing trends to identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Support budgeting and cost reviews related to materials, tooling, outside processing, and operating supplies.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of purchasing, procurement, or supply chain experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of purchasing processes, supplier management, and material planning.
- Experience working with ERP systems; Epicor experience strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as stamping, deep draw, CNC machining, and tool & die.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and general documentation management.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
- Experience purchasing metals, machined components, tooling, or manufacturing supplies.
- Experience in Aerospace & Defense or another regulated manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with AS9100, ISO, and ITAR requirements.
- Experience working with outside processors such as plating, heat treating, NDT, and coatings.
- Supply chain or procurement certification, such as APICS CPIM, CSCP, or equivalent, is a plus.
