What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do?
As an Inflow and Infiltration Monitoring Specialist (Wastewater) with the Public Works Department, your career will be filled with diverse and impactful experiences. You will perform skilled and technical work in the inspection and repair of sanitary sewer operations. Your daily activities will include installing and operating closed-circuit camera equipment to inspect, analyze, and detect leaks, cracks, and other defects in sewer lines. You might spend a morning identifying and documenting a series of cracks in a sewer line beneath a busy street, ensuring that the necessary repairs are scheduled promptly to prevent flooding.
You will test and determine the condition of pipe joints, note the location of any damaged pipes, and report these findings to your supervisor. You will also install manhole inserts, clean and repair manholes, and measure distances and depths using chemical detectors in deep manholes. Operating the closed-circuit television truck, crash truck, camera crawler, and transporter, as well as the combination vactor/flusher, you will clean sewer systems, including manholes, laterals, mainlines, and wet wells. This could involve working in residential neighborhoods to ensure that sewer systems are clear and functioning properly, directly benefiting local homeowners by preventing water damage and flooding. Your role will involve maintaining and performing routine and difficult repairs on mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment, such as generators, air compressors, pressure gauges, television equipment, and pumps associated with the televising and repair operations.
Ensuring the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures will be a key part of your responsibilities. You will set up traffic control devices and check for overhead utility lines, traffic, and underground utilities. Additionally, you will train equipment operators and technicians as needed, answer questions from the public concerning the inspection and repair of sanitary sewer lines and maintain detailed records of your inspection and repair activities. Your dedication and expertise will make a significant difference in the community, ensuring that the city's wastewater management is effective and reliable.
