An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression and emergency medical services on an assigned shift. The employee performs a variety of technical, procedural, and regulatory methods and techniques relating to fire suppression and prevention, rescue, first aid, and equipment and apparatus operation. Responds to emergency situations requiring emergency medical attention and performs duties of an EMT. Acquires and maintains required State certification for Firefighter and EMT. Work is performed under general supervision of the Fire Captain.
Duties
- May drive fire apparatus or other vehicles to incident scenes
- Participates in rescue operations at fire scenes, accidents, hazardous areas, and other emergency situations
- Renders first aid and assists other agencies in emergencies
- Responds to emergency medical calls and performs duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedures and protocols, and within established chain of command; refers to policy manuals as necessary.
- Assesses and evaluates situation at scenes of emergency response; surveys and secures scene, requesting additional assistance, as necessary; determines mechanism of injury and equipment needed to effect rescue and initiation of treatment.
- Participates in continuous training and physical fitness programs, and in the routine cleaning and maintenance of fire station facilities, grounds, and equipment
- Conducts inspections and tests of firefighting, rescue, and first aid equipment, apparatus, and fire hydrants
- Participates in pre-fire planning inspections, sketches building, and area plans noting street and hydrant locations, obstacles, hazards, and other features pertinent to the development of firefighting strategy and rescue operations
- Participates in salvage operations and identification of fire causes
- Assists with presentations for fire division personnel and public groups
- Preserves evidence of possible arson and circumstances causing medical emergencies.
- Prepares a variety of reports, data, and written materials
- Conducts periodic inspections and tests of fire hydrants, firefighting, rescue and first aid equipment and apparatus
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency supplemented by training courses in firefighting, fire prevention, CPR/first aid, rescue, apparatus and equipment operation, and related fire sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Education Incentive:
Percentage increase in salary of two percent (2%) for having obtained an associate degree in the related field specific to the job. An additional two percent (2%) salary increase may be considered for employees who have obtained a bachelor's degree in the aforementioned fields of study, as well as an additional two percent (2%) for obtaining a master’s degree.
