Key Responsibilities
Student Intake and Orientation
- Conduct intake interviews with prospective ABE (BL/GED and Digital Literacy) students to assess their literacy levels, educational background, and learning goals.
- Facilitate new student orientation to introduce learners to the organization’s programs, resources, and support systems.
- Guide learners through the intake process, ensuring they feel welcome, informed, and prepared to begin their learning journey.
- Collaborate with Volunteer Coordinator to match ABE (BL/GED and Digital Literacy) learners with suitable volunteer tutors, considering each learner’s unique needs, learning style, and personality.
- Work closely with ABE learners to establish achievable goals, fostering motivation and a sense of progress
GED Preparation and Learner Support
- Work directly with fast-track or appropriate unmatched students, or students who are matched and needing additional support, who are preparing for the GED exams and/or need academic skills for college, providing personalized instruction and guidance on subjects that include reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.
- Coordinate and manage volunteer classroom tutors.
- Add students to KET Fast Forward online GED program and manage seats.
Learner Support
- Support learners in setting and achieving personal, educational, and career-related goals as part of their learning journey.
- Foster a supportive and motivational learning environment, helping learners recognize their progress and celebrate milestones.
- Follow and recognize student progress in groups, pairs and in the online KET program.
- Collaborate with staff to plan the tutor-student recognition event and recognize student accomplishments.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with ABE students to achieve student retention and achievement of goals.
- Maintain a welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants
Tutor Training and Support
- Facilitate ABE tutor training for volunteers
- Collaborate with Volunteer Coordinator to provide support for volunteer tutors working with ABE students (ex. Curricular and strategy recommendations), provide specialized training as needed and relevant
Resource Development and Curriculum Support
- Collaborate with Volunteer Coordinator to develop and maintain a library of print and online instructional resources for GED and basic literacy students as well as DL students.
- Stay updated on GED testing requirements and best practices in adult literacy education to keep materials relevant and effective.
Progress Tracking and Reporting
- Enter all student intake data into LACES. Add student outcomes and other comments on student progress and challenges to LACES.
- Enter all hours from GED groups and Workforce groups, as well as online study hours using KET, into LACES.
- Identify trends and insights from learner progress data to support continuous improvement of the ABE instructional program.
Team Collaboration
- Participate in staff meetings, fundraising events, outreach/public relations, and other activities to support the mission of Literacy NRV.
- Collaborate with other staff, program coordinators, and community organizations to support student success
About Literacy NRV
Literacy NRV is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (ProLiteracy member and United Way of Southwest Virginia partner agency) providing free instruction in reading, writing, math, digital literacy, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), as well as GED and U.S. citizenship exam preparation.

- Team: 1 full-time and 4 part-time staff
- Volunteers: 150+
- Learners served annually: 350 adults

- Bonus points for bilingual skills (especially Spanish) and/or familiarity with adult basic education principles.

Compensation
Salary: $19-21 per hour Benefits: Retirement contribution, generous paid leave, flexible schedule, and professional development.
