Environmental Services & Maintenance Technician
Position Summary
The Environmental Services & Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in ensuring Fuqua School provides a clean, safe, attractive, and well-maintained learning environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position is responsible for daily custodial services, sanitation, and light building maintenance while helping preserve the school's facilities and grounds. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and committed to providing exceptional service in support of the school's mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Environmental Services
- Clean, sanitize, and disinfect classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, locker rooms, and other campus facilities.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and polish floors and surfaces throughout campus.
- Clean windows, mirrors, doors, furniture, and other high-touch surfaces.
- Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste materials.
- Replenish restroom and classroom supplies, including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer.
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment, including vacuums, carpet extractors, floor scrubbers, buffers, and other cleaning equipment.
- Maintain custodial closets and storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
- Follow all safety procedures regarding the proper handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
- Assist with deep cleaning projects during school breaks and summer months.
Building Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections of school buildings to identify maintenance needs or safety concerns.
- Complete minor building repairs, including replacing light bulbs, ceiling tiles, door hardware, locks, filters, and other basic facility components.
- Assist with painting, touch-up work, furniture assembly, and minor carpentry projects.
- Perform basic plumbing repairs such as replacing faucets, unclogging drains, and repairing toilets when appropriate.
- Assist with basic electrical maintenance, including replacing switches, outlets, and light fixtures within the scope of training.
- Monitor HVAC systems and report concerns requiring specialized service.
- Assist with preventative maintenance tasks to extend the life of school facilities and equipment.
- Set up and break down tables, chairs, stages, and equipment for school events and athletic activities.
- Help maintain the appearance of the campus by performing light exterior duties, including sweeping sidewalks, removing debris, and assisting with seasonal maintenance.
- Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and equipment failures promptly to the Director of Operations.
General Responsibilities
- Respond promptly to custodial or maintenance requests from faculty and staff.
- Assist during emergencies, weather events, or other situations requiring facility support.
- Maintain a professional, courteous, and service-oriented attitude with students, parents, faculty, visitors, and vendors.
- Follow all Fuqua School policies and safety procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations.
QualificationsEducation
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience
- Previous custodial, housekeeping, facilities maintenance, or building maintenance experience preferred.
- Experience operating commercial cleaning equipment is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of building maintenance systems is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of proper cleaning procedures, sanitation practices, and safe chemical handling.
- Basic understanding of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and common hand and power tools.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, faculty, and staff.
- Dependable, trustworthy, and able to maintain confidentiality when appropriate.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Safely operate cleaning equipment and maintenance tools.
- Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb ladders and perform work at moderate heights.
Work Schedule
- Part-time and/or Full-time
- Mid-afternoon through early evening
- Additional hours may be required for special events, emergencies, or summer projects.
Work Environment
This position requires working throughout the school campus and may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, weather conditions, and other environmental factors associated with custodial and maintenance work. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided as needed.
