A Day in the Life of a Medical Director
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, as the Medical Director you'll divide your time between providing direct patient care and leading the clinical direction of the organization's medical service line. You'll partner closely with executive leadership, providers, nursing staff, and practice managers to improve quality, expand services, enhance patient access, and support clinical excellence. Your leadership will play a key role in advancing the organization's mission of delivering equitable, patient-centered healthcare throughout the Milwaukee community.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide comprehensive primary care services to patients, including preventive and chronic disease management
- Oversee clinical quality, patient outcomes, and patient satisfaction initiatives
- Supervise, mentor, and support medical providers, and manage and resolve clinical personnel issues
- Recruit, interview, and recommend physician candidates for hire
- Conduct provider performance evaluations and manage provider development
- Participate in disciplinary actions and terminations as appropriate
- Approve provider time-off requests and timecards
- Foster collaboration across medical and interdisciplinary care teams
- Partner with Practice Managers to improve patient access and operational performance
- Develop and implement new clinical programs and service line initiatives that integrate with other departments
- Lead primary care provider meetings and support nursing staff
- Assist with budget planning and maintain fiscal accountability
- Develop clinical protocols, policies, and evidence-based best practices
- Participate in internal and external committees, grant development, and organizational initiatives
- Represent the organization within the community and promote its mission
- Support continuous quality improvement and regulatory compliance
Requirements and Qualifications:
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school with completed residency training
- Board Certified in an appropriate medical specialty
- Active Wisconsin medical license
- Current DEA registration
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and provider/personnel management skills
- Strong commitment to patient-centered, equitable healthcare and reducing health disparities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing clinical programs and care pathways
- 5–10 years of ambulatory or primary care clinical experience
- 3–5 years of physician leadership experience
- Previous experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) or community health center
- Experience serving diverse and underserved patient populations
