We’re looking for someone who can gradually take over managing the care for our son who is 38 and on the spectrum. Over time, we hope you would become devoted to Adam and be willing to accept this responsibility for the rest of his life. This would require you to not have other obligations or possible future plans like starting a family or retiring that could interfere with providing care for Adam. In addition, ideally, you would need to do the following as we age:
- Manage Adam’s staff and services
- Fill in for absent staff
- Provide late morning sleep coverage
- Share a home (yours or his) and provide meals
- Stay in the area indefinitely
A special benefit of this position is the joy and comfort you will receive from being with Adam. Despite his challenges, Adam showers his staff with unconditional love and affection and elevates their emotional well-being. In return, the staff have been more than happy to provide the care he needs and readily accommodate his autism, intellectual deficits and nonverbal nature. After being with us a while, some staff have commented that it no longer feels like a job. Instead, they mostly see it as an opportunity to enjoy Adam.
When Adam encounters someone, he’ll sense whether they’re kind and open hearted through their energy and manner. If he’s comfortable, he’ll engage using his eyes, expression, and gentle touch. Experiencing his warmth, sweetness and appreciation encourages people to connect with him. If you think you’d enjoy this type of interaction, this position is likely a good fit for you!
Initially, you’ll just help Adam with his daily activities to see how strong a bond you can develop. This would include going to the pool, beach, parks, and nature centers, visiting stores, doing various activities at home, and listening to music in town. As you take on more responsibilities, your pay will increase. We’ll develop a plan with you to accomplish this. If you (preferably with a partner) decide to take over all of our responsibilities in the future, you will receive the full salary plus living expenses for Adam.
We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thanks much for considering our position!
