Veronica Arts Media is a youth-centered nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free, high-quality after-school and enrichment programming to underserved students across New York City.
Under the leadership of the Program Director and Multi-Site Supervisor, the Group Leader is responsible for supervising and supporting a group of elementary and/or middle school students during the after-school program. The Group Leader helps create a safe, structured, joyful, and engaging environment while supporting students during homework help, enrichment activities, recreation, social-emotional learning, and daily program routines.
A successful Group Leader will bring a positive youth-development approach to the role; build strong relationships with students, families, and staff; support students’ academic, physical, social, and emotional development; assist with classroom management and program activities; complete administrative tasks in a timely manner; and demonstrate a commitment to equity, inclusion, creativity, and youth empowerment.
Qualifications
* High School Diploma or GED required; college enrollment or coursework in education, youth development, social work, arts, recreation, or a related field preferred
* At least 1–2 years of experience working with children or youth in an after-school, school, camp, community-based, or youth development setting preferred
* Strong classroom management and behavior management skills
* Ability to support students with homework, literacy, math, and general academic studies
* Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
* Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, school staff, and program staff
* Passion for working with youth in underserved communities
* Interest in media arts, STEAM, sports, fitness, literacy, leadership, or creative youth programming preferred
* Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus
* Strong work ethic, professionalism, reliability, and commitment to student safety
* Basic computer skills, including email, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and online attendance or reporting systems
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, listen, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout the program space. This position is active and requires the ability to supervise students during classroom activities, recreation, transitions, field trips, and emergency drills. The employee may occasionally need to lift or move items under 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.
Duties
Student Supervision & Safety
* Supervise and ensure the safety, well-being, and engagement of assigned students during all program activities
* Maintain active supervision during arrival, dismissal, transitions, meals, activities, recreation, and field trips
* Create a classroom culture rooted in respect, participation, accountability, and care
* Support students in following program expectations, routines, and behavior guidelines
* Maintain accurate attendance records for assigned students
* Report safety concerns, incidents, or behavioral concerns to the Program Director or Assistant Director in a timely manner
* Follow all school, DYCD, SACC, and Veronica Arts Media safety procedures and protocols
Academic Support & Youth Development
* Lead or support homework help, tutoring, literacy activities, math support, and academic enrichment
* Support students with reading, writing, math, and general study skills
* Facilitate or assist with social-emotional learning activities, team-building games, leadership activities, and group discussions
* Encourage student voice, creativity, confidence, and positive peer relationships
* Adapt support strategies to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of participants
* Help students develop responsibility, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and positive self-expression
Program Activities & Curriculum Support
* Assist Activity Specialists, Teaching Artists, and program staff during enrichment activities such as media arts, STEAM, literacy, sports, fitness, leadership, and creative projects
* Help prepare materials, organize supplies, and support the flow of daily activities
* Keep students engaged and actively participating during all program components
* Support culminating events, showcases, family engagement events, performances, presentations, and special projects
* Ensure activities align with youth development principles, DYCD COMPASS requirements, and Veronica Arts Media’s mission and program goals
Communication & Collaboration
* Communicate professionally and respectfully with students, families, school staff, and program team members
* Collaborate with the Program Director, Activity Specialists, and other Group Leaders to support program quality
* Share student progress, concerns, or needs with program leadership as appropriate
* Check email and program communication platforms regularly and respond in a timely manner
* Participate in staff meetings, planning meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions as required
Administrative Responsibilities
* Submit required documentation accurately and on time
* Maintain records such as attendance, incident reports, behavior notes, supply requests, and student participation updates
* Complete required trainings and professional development hours as assigned
* Follow all organizational policies, school-site procedures, and DYCD/SACC compliance requirements
* Maintain confidentiality regarding student, family, staff, and program information
Program Support
* Support field trips, special events, family engagement activities, recruitment events, and community-building opportunities
* Assist with program setup, cleanup, snack distribution, dismissal, and daily operations
* Help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students
* Serve as a positive role model for participants
* Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director, Assistant Director, or organizational leadership
Schedule
Monday–Friday, generally between the hours of 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
Position will start September 2026 for the 26-27 school year.
Exact hours may vary depending on school site needs, program schedule, and student dismissal times.
