Position Summary
UBMD Pediatrics is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to provide per diem clinical nursing support to the research program within the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes. Study participants are primarily pediatric, though some protocols may also include adults.
The Research Nurse will support protocol-driven clinical trial activities, with primary responsibilities that include phlebotomy, administering study-related infusions, and clinically monitoring research participants during and following study procedures.
Hours will vary based on clinical trial activity and participant scheduling needs. The position may require up to 20 hours per week, including occasional weekend morning availability.
The Principal Investigator/Co-Investigators will be at the center during clinical trials procedures to support the nurse and respond to question. Additionally, the nurse will avail of the support of a research assistant who will perform biologic samples' processing and shipping.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Trial Procedures
- Perform phlebotomy and other nursing procedures required by approved clinical trial protocols.
- Administer study-related medications and infusions in accordance with approved protocols, provider orders, and applicable policies.
- Monitor participants before, during, and after infusions and other study procedures.
- Obtain and document vital signs and other clinical observations at protocol-specified intervals.
- Recognize changes in a participant’s clinical condition and promptly escalate concerns to the appropriate investigator or clinical team member.
- Respond appropriately to infusion reactions or other clinical events in accordance with established procedures.
Documentation and Compliance
- Complete required clinical and research documentation accurately and within established timeframes.
- Follow applicable clinical trial protocols, research requirements, privacy standards, and organizational policies.
- Maintain all required nursing, clinical research, and protocol-specific training.
- Communicate adverse events, participant concerns, and potential protocol issues to the research team.
Research Team Coordination
- Collaborate with investigators, research coordinators, physicians, and other members of the clinical research team.
- Assist with coordinating participant visits and protocol-required procedures.
- Communicate scheduling requirements, participant status, and clinical concerns to the appropriate members of the study team.
- Ensure required clinical supplies and equipment are available for scheduled research visits.
- Perform other research-related nursing duties within the scope of the position as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Current and unrestricted New York State Registered Professional Nurse license.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (minimum).
- Current Basic Life Support certification.
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including pediatric phlebotomy; may also perform phlebotomy on adult participants.
- Experience administering and monitoring intravenous infusions.
- Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to changes in a participant’s clinical condition.
- Strong clinical documentation and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
- Ability to accommodate a variable, protocol-driven schedule, and willing to work occasionally during weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Pediatric nursing experience.
- Previous clinical research or clinical trial experience.
- Endocrinology, diabetes, infusion, or ambulatory-care experience.
- Familiarity with Good Clinical Practice and human-subject research requirements.
