About Us
We are a growing transportation and trucking company seeking an experienced Safety Manager to oversee all aspects of fleet safety, regulatory compliance, driver qualification, and risk management. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, HazMat compliance, driver safety programs, accident management, and transportation operations.
Position Summary
The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and compliance programs to ensure the company operates in accordance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations. This role works closely with drivers, management, and regulatory agencies to promote a culture of safety and operational excellence.
Key ResponsibilitiesSafety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all FMCSA, DOT, state, and federal regulations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain company safety policies and procedures.
- Monitor driver logs, Hours of Service (HOS), ELD compliance, and driver performance.
- Conduct safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Maintain driver qualification files and compliance records.
- Manage drug and alcohol testing programs and ensure regulatory compliance.
Driver Management & Training
- Review and approve driver applications and qualifications.
- Conduct driver onboarding, orientation, and ongoing safety training.
- Educate drivers on company policies, DOT regulations, defensive driving, and accident prevention.
- Provide coaching and corrective action when safety issues arise.
- Maintain regular communication with drivers regarding safety performance and compliance requirements.
Accident & Claims Management
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and safety violations.
- Coordinate accident reporting and documentation.
- Work with insurance companies, law enforcement, and management on claims and investigations.
- Identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
- Track accident trends and develop safety improvement plans.
HazMat Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all hazardous materials transportation regulations.
- Maintain HazMat training programs and certifications.
- Oversee proper documentation, placarding, and handling procedures.
- Stay current with regulatory changes affecting hazardous materials transportation.
Fleet & Operational Compliance
- Oversee vehicle registration, permits, and licensing requirements.
- Manage IFTA reporting and fuel tax compliance.
- Ensure fleet maintenance and inspection programs meet regulatory standards.
- Monitor CSA scores and implement improvement strategies.
- Assist with DOT audits and regulatory inspections.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate safety and compliance records.
- Prepare reports for management regarding safety performance and compliance metrics.
- Stay informed of regulatory updates and industry best practices.
- Support operational teams with compliance-related issues and solutions.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in trucking safety, transportation compliance, or fleet management.
- Strong knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, HazMat, CSA, HOS, ELD, and transportation regulations.
- Experience handling accidents, claims, driver qualification files, and compliance audits.
- Knowledge of IFTA reporting, vehicle registrations, permits, and fleet compliance requirements.
- Experience training and coaching drivers on safety and compliance matters.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with transportation management and safety compliance software.
- HazMat certification or experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or similar safety certification.
- Experience preparing for and managing DOT audits.
