Job Summary:
The Sawmill Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, reliability, and performance of all sawmill equipment, machinery, electrical systems, and related facility systems. This position leads the maintenance team, coordinates preventative and corrective maintenance activities, troubleshoots mechanical and electrical issues, and works closely with operations leadership to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, extensive mechanical and electrical maintenance experience, and a proven ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced industrial or sawmill environment.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the daily maintenance and reliable operation of all sawmill equipment, machinery, and systems.
- Lead, supervise, train, and mentor maintenance personnel.
- Develop and maintain preventative and predictive maintenance programs.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other equipment issues.
- Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns and coordinate repairs to minimize production downtime.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify potential failures before they impact production.
- Work closely with production and management teams to prioritize maintenance needs and coordinate equipment repairs.
- Coordinate with outside contractors, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and vendors as needed.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of critical maintenance parts, supplies, and equipment.
- Ensure maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and according to established procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and applicable environmental and industry standards.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment history.
- Analyze recurring equipment problems and develop corrective action plans.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, production efficiency, safety, and maintenance processes.
- Participate in capital improvement projects, equipment installations, upgrades, and modifications.
- Establish priorities and schedules for planned maintenance and emergency repairs.
- Manage maintenance-related costs and assist with developing and monitoring the maintenance budget.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on hardwood sawmill maintenance experience required.
- Proven leadership experience in millwright, maintenance, or industrial maintenance roles.
- Strong knowledge and troubleshooting expertise in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals.
- Experience with PLC systems, automation, and controls is a plus.
- Strong understanding of sawmill equipment, maintenance practices, and production operations.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose problems, identify root causes, and implement effective repairs.
- Proven ability to lead, train, and mentor maintenance personnel.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, production-driven environment and respond to equipment breakdowns as needed.
