Midwest Stainless Technologies is seeking a Process Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This position plays a key role in designing custom sanitary process systems for the dairy, food, beverage, and specialty process industries.
Our Process Engineers work directly with customers, project managers, mechanical designers, vendors, and fabrication teams to develop practical, innovative process solutions from concept through commissioning. Every project is unique, providing opportunities to solve challenging engineering problems while making a direct impact on project success.

Primary Responsibilities
- Develop process concepts and collaborate with customers to determine the best technical solution for each application.
- Design sanitary process systems including receiving, batching, pasteurization, membrane filtration, Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems, heat transfer, storage, and packaging processes.
- Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment layouts, utility matrices, and process documentation.
- Perform process calculations including mass balances, hydraulic calculations, and utility requirements.
- Size and specify sanitary process equipment including pumps, valves, tanks, heat exchangers, membrane systems, instrumentation, and process piping.
- Prepare equipment specifications, technical bid packages, and assist with vendor selection.
- Support estimating by reviewing customer requirements and providing technical input during proposal development.
- Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Mechanical Designers, Purchasing, Fabrication, and Field Service throughout project execution.
- Participate in customer meetings, design reviews, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning, and startup support.
- Provide technical support during fabrication, installation, and field troubleshooting.
- Contribute to the continued development of engineering standards and best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field preferred. Candidates with equivalent experience designing sanitary process systems will also be considered.
- Experience designing sanitary process systems for the dairy, food, beverage, or related process industries.
- Working knowledge of sanitary design principles, including 3-A, USDA, and FDA requirements.
- Experience developing PFDs, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and process calculations.
- Experience with AutoCAD or other CAD software is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to work directly with customers and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Willingness to travel periodically for customer meetings, design reviews, commissioning, and startup support.
Experience in One or More of the Following is a Plus
- Dairy, cheese, whey, or beverage processing
- Membrane filtration (UF, MF, RO)
- Pasteurization systems
- Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems
- Hygienic piping systems
- Utility system design (steam, glycol, cooling water, compressed air, etc.)
- Process troubleshooting and optimization
