Overview
The Recreation Assistant plays a vital role in supporting A Better Chance for Our Children's Rec-n-Respite program.
The program runs two Saturdays per month. The position is for 7.5 hours, twice a month (total of 15 hours per month).
Rec-n-Respite is a recreational support program for children ages 6–14 who have been adopted or are living in permanent guardianship families. Activities include arts and crafts, outdoor play, snack and lunchtime, games, movies, and free play.
- Small group: maximum 15 children
- Not a drop-in program – same cohort throughout the year
- Staff team of 3–5 members
- Held two Saturdays a month, 9:30 AM–4:00 PM, September to June
- Staff arrive at 9:00 AM and stay until 4:30 PM

- Hourly Rate: $16–$18 (based on experience)
- Training: Paid, 2-hour session in August 2025 (date TBD)
- Commitment: September–June on scheduled Saturdays

This position involves working closely with participants to foster a fun, safe, and engaging environment. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with children and possess skills that enhance their development through recreational activities.
Duties
- Assist in planning and implementing recreational programs and activities for children and youth.
- Supervise participants during activities to ensure safety and enjoyment.
- Provide support in managing behavior and facilitating positive interactions among participants.
- Engage with children through games, sports, arts, and crafts to promote physical activity and creativity.
- Maintain a clean and organized environment for all recreational activities.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and staff regarding participant progress and any concerns.
- Collaborate with other staff members to create a cohesive program that meets the needs of all participants.
Skills
Candidates should possess the following skills:
- Childcare experience, demonstrating the ability to care for and engage with children effectively.
- Experience in behavior management techniques to support diverse needs and maintain order during activities.
- Experience that showcases responsibility and care for children.
- Experience working with children and youth in various settings, such as camps or after-school programs.
