POSITION TITLE: Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Self-contained classroom)
DEPARTMENT: As per assignment
REPORTS TO: Special Education Coordinator/Director of Special Education
SUPERVISES: Does not apply
JOB GOAL: A certified Teacher of the Deaf will provide language, academic, social emotional instruction via total communication (ASL, sign supported speech, cued speech, spoken language, etc.) as appropriate for the student’s hearing loss, language level, and needs. Students in the DHH classroom will have access to the mode of communication and supports identified in the IEP.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide direct services to students in the mode of communication identified on the IEP for students who are deaf and hard of hearing including, but not limited to: reading development, math, science, social studies, social emotional skills, pre-teaching/re-teaching vocabulary and concepts, activities to improve oral and written language skills, auditory training (if applicable), Deaf Culture (if applicable) and developing self-advocacy skills.
· Provide in-service training and on-going consultation to district staff regarding student’s hearing loss and its educational implications, accommodations/modifications, and proper use and care of assistive listening technology as listed on student’s IEP.
· Modify and adjust general education curriculum to meet the language and communication needs of DHH students.
· Support communication with hearing peers in general education settings (when applicable with a certified educational sign language interpreter (if determined via the IEP)
· Develop IEPs that address the unique communication and language needs of DHH students and collaborate with member district staff to create appropriate goals, objectives, and benchmarks.
· Provide guidance to member districts in developing programs that meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students with hearing loss.
· Assist member districts in guiding the learning process toward the achievement of IEP goals/objectives/benchmarks.
· Regularly assess student progress, provide required progress reports, and attend conferences pertaining to students.
· Collaborate with Audiologist to review student evaluation results and implement recommendations, including delivery, set-up, and maintenance of hearing assistance technology.
· Compile and complete forms, reports and billing as required, including IEP paperwork using the district IEP software.
· Conduct ongoing evaluation, using both formal and informal assessments to determine appropriate placements, supports, and share information with parents and other stakeholders.
· Assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of students under his/her direct supervision.
· Maintain and improve professional competence.
Perform such other duties and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the principal or administrative designee.
In addition to the above responsibilities, teachers are expected to follow the work year as outlined annually by the Board of Education. Currently, teachers are expected to report for 180 working days. Please be aware that the working year (180 days) for teachers is greater than the student contact days.
KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS:
- Valid Illinois State Teaching Certificate with endorsements of Teacher of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing registered with the Peoria County Regional Office of Education.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Demonstrate via interview with DHH supervisor fluency skills using total communication (Sign Supported Speech, ASL, Cued Speech, etc.)

2. This job may require use of personal vehicle to travel to other districts as required by the student’s IEP. Mileage reimbursement will be issued as per current contract language.
