The Custodian plays an essential role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. As a key member of the Facilities team, the Custodian supports the daily operations of the school by ensuring that classrooms, offices, and campus facilities are well maintained, sanitary, and properly set up to support learning, events, and community activities.
Custodial Services and Campus Maintenance

Perform custodial work in classrooms, offices, restrooms, and other interior spaces throughout campus.

Sweep, vacuum, mop, scrub, wax, and polish floors using industrial cleaning equipment and tools.

Clean walls, ceilings, light fixtures, and vents; dust and polish surfaces as needed, occasionally using ladders.

Wash, replace, and maintain blinds and window coverings as needed.

Remove stains from rugs, drapes, walls, and floors using appropriate cleaning solutions and chemicals.

Sweep, blow, and clean walkways, patios, and outdoor areas as assigned.

Move furniture, boxes, cabinets, and equipment to support cleaning, maintenance, or operational needs.

Assist with setting up and breaking down tables, chairs, umbrellas, linens, and equipment for school events and social functions.

Respond to custodial service requests from administrators, professional community, and other members of the school community.

Perform additional related duties as assigned to support campus operations.

Ability to perform assigned custodial duties reliably and safely.

Ability to communicate effectively with members of the school community.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently or as part of a team.

Willingness to work evenings or varied schedules as required by campus operations.

Ability to successfully complete and maintain a Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprintbased background clearance as a condition of employment.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Prior custodial, janitorial, or facilities experience in a school or similar environment.

Hourly Range: $22.00 $26.00

The Custodian position requires regular physical activity and the ability to work both indoors and outdoors. Duties include frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and reaching. The role requires the use of hands to operate tools, equipment, and cleaning machinery, as well as sufficient hand-eye coordination to perform detailed tasks.
The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 80 pounds. Visual acuity is required for both near and far vision, including the ability to adjust focus. The work environment is routinely active and fast-paced, particularly during peak operational times, with a moderate noise level and frequent interruptions due to service needs.
