Position Overview
Job Title: Model-Based Systems Engineer
Location: Dayton, OH / Wright-Patterson Air Force Base
Work Arrangement: Onsite / In-Office with limited remote flexibility
Compensation: $75,000 - $140,000 annually, based on experience, technical depth, and clearance status
Experience Level: Early Career to Intermediate
Citizenship Requirement: U.S. Citizen required
Security Clearance: Active DoD clearance preferred. Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a U.S. DoD security clearance within the first year of employment.
About the Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated Model-Based Systems Engineer to support mission-focused systems engineering, digital engineering, architecture modeling, and decision-support initiatives for defense programs.
This role is focused on applying and growing experience across Model-Based Systems Engineering, SysML modeling, systems architecture, requirements traceability, model maintenance, technical documentation, and complex systems analysis.
The ideal candidate is technically curious, detail-oriented, self-directed, and comfortable working in a multidisciplinary engineering environment. This position supports work in the Dayton, Ohio / Wright-Patterson Air Force Base area and requires regular onsite collaboration with Government stakeholders, systems engineers, software teams, data teams, and technical leadership.
Candidates with active DoD clearances are preferred. Strong U.S. citizen candidates who are eligible to obtain and maintain a clearance may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
MBSE Model Development & Support
- Support the development, maintenance, and configuration management of MBSE artifacts
- Develop and update SysML models, model interfaces, architecture artifacts, and supporting documentation
- Assist with model enhancements, defect resolution, and updates across evolving system baselines
- Support the full lifecycle of systems development, including architecture, design, integration, testing, acceptance, and field support
- Maintain model quality, consistency, and traceability
- Help support model taxonomy, ontology, and modeling standards in coordination with senior engineers and stakeholders
Systems Engineering & Architecture Support
- Assist in translating customer needs, mission objectives, and technical requirements into model-based engineering approaches
- Support planning, design, development, testing, and integration of complex systems solutions
- Assist with analysis of systems-of-systems, interfaces, dependencies, risks, and capability gaps
- Support trade-off analysis, gap analysis, mission assurance analysis, and technical assessments
- Help maintain traceability across stakeholders, requirements, models, interfaces, and delivered capabilities
- Collaborate with systems engineers, software engineers, data engineers, architects, and analysts to support integrated technical solutions
Stakeholder & Government Support
- Support stakeholder communications, technical discussions, tasker responses, and Integrated Product Team activities
- Assist with preparing technical briefings, status reports, model summaries, and knowledge-transfer materials
- Participate in customer-facing reviews, engineering discussions, and working sessions
- Communicate technical information clearly through documentation, presentations, and team collaboration
- Support compliance-related artifact generation and mission assurance risk identification as needed
Data, Analysis & Technical Artifacts
- Support data engineering and analysis activities, including planning, documentation, and technical artifact development
- Assist with data profiling, transformation, modeling, and analysis where required
- Help develop and maintain architecture artifacts, model documentation, data definitions, and technical reports
- Support verification, validation, design analysis, and decision-support activities
- Assist with proposal-related engineering support and technical assessments as needed
Team Contribution & Growth
- Work effectively within a multidisciplinary technical team
- Participate in peer reviews of models, requirements, architecture documentation, and technical artifacts
- Learn and apply MBSE best practices, modeling discipline, documentation standards, and engineering workflows
- Collaborate with senior engineers and technical leads to improve model quality and delivery outcomes
- Take ownership of assigned tasks and communicate progress, risks, and blockers clearly
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a U.S. DoD security clearance within the first year of employment
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, General Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
- 1-5+ years of experience with systems engineering, product development, systems integration, architecture development, MBSE, software engineering, or related technical projects
- Exposure to Model-Based Engineering concepts, including one or more of:
- MBE
- MBSE
- MDA
- MDD
- MDE
- Experience or coursework involving systems models, architecture artifacts, requirements traceability, or technical documentation
- Programming experience or coursework in an object-oriented programming language such as Java, C#, or C++
- Strong verbal, written, presentation, and communication skills
- Ability to work in a collaborative technical team environment
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Ability and willingness to work onsite in Dayton, OH / Wright-Patterson Air Force Base
Preferred Experience
- Active DoD clearance
- Experience with UML or SysML modeling
- Familiarity with MBSE tools such as:
- Sparx Enterprise Architect
- Cameo Systems Modeler
- Rational Rhapsody
- Experience working on Air Force, DoD, aerospace, national security, or mission-focused technology programs
- Exposure to systems-of-systems, architecture modeling, complex systems analysis, or decision-support environments
- Experience with data profiling, data transformation, data modeling, SQL, or technical data analysis
- Ability to apply engineering, software, data, or modeling experience to the military and defense domain
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, dynamic team environment
Additional Beneficial Experience
- Experience with modeling and simulation, including physics-level, engineering-level, or operational-level modeling
- Exposure to ETL workflows, data pipelines, data modeling, or data profiling
