Summary
The Food Services Assistant will join Open Doors’ team and work closely with volunteers, and leadership to ensure smooth operations of the area’s only low-barrier emergency shelter’s food services program. The position will be responsible for managing a kitchen and provision of food services. Currently, Open Doors offers nutritional assistance, mainly through grab-and-go and pantry items. A customer-first mindset is desired, as work will involve daily interaction with a vulnerable population.
The position will work Monday through Friday, from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m.
*Open Doors staff are considered essential and if program need warrants it, additional hours may be necessary in inclement weather.
Organization Profile
Since 2007, Open Doors has provided shelter, compassionate support, and access to services to the Harrisonburg – Rockingham community. In December of 2024, Open Doors embarked on an exciting journey through the opening of the area's first (and only) year-round emergency shelter, serving 80 adults daily.
Duties
- Manages kitchen cleanness and ensures standards are maintained.
- Manages offerings to ensure high nutritional value and diversity.
- Prepares, packs, and serves shelter guests nutritional support items.
- Creates, manages, and maintains standard operating procedures and policies.
Qualifications
- Experience in food preparation and service required.
- ServSafe preferred; training provided by employer if necessary.
- Experience in a supervisory role beneficial.
Hazards
Contact with hazardous cleaning materials, hot foods, kitchen equipment, sharp equipment, and heavy lifting may be required. Minimal hazards if appropriate precautions are taken and documented procedures followed. Training will be provided as necessary.
Pay: $15.50 per hour
